Fire alarm rang at 2 a.m. Monday as Harry Reid’s barn on South Main Street burned completely with contents inside except a horse released by Cordy Briggs. Residents debate cause from electrical short circuit to arson while noting eight to ten barn fires in the past year. firefighters prevented spread to nearby properties.
Decoration Day ceremonies will be held here as usual with Judge Rose of Kansas Illinois as the speaker. Further particulars will be announced in the following issue.
Levi Jackson longtime resident west of the city died after a week of illness from lung fever. He would have turned 69 next July 16. A 50 year township resident, he was a respected farmer and successful small fruit and vegetable grower. He leaves a wife, a daughter Mrs Decatur Robertson, and a grandchild. Funeral at home with burial at Spanglers cemetery Wednesday morning.
George Dailey known as Squee says Jack Brent linger struck him with rocks near Brent Linger’s home two miles south of town. Dailey bears ugly marks on head and face. A warrant for Brent exists but not yet served and the notice hints at domestic trouble. Tonight a show is planned.
Prominent Rockville lawyer Samuel D Puett collapsed at 6 30 p m Sunday after dinner at the Park Hotel where he was a part owner. He died of heart failure at age over 60 leaving a widow and son Maxwell Puett. He was a well known Fifth District figure and once a congressional candidate and presidential elector. He was a Mason Elk and active Methodist.
Paul Ike a longtime township resident succumbed to a stroke at his North 8th Street home last Thursday. At 72 he left a large family of 21 children. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 pm at the Christian church with Rev. Thomas Hall delivering the sermon. interment followed at Riverside cemetery.
Mrs Kathrine Hall resident near Bethlehem church southwest of Clinton is very ill after a liver cancer operation at Terre Haute hospital. Widow of Thomas Hall and mother of A T M Hall, she is not expected to live long.
Fredrick G Strickland of Anderson Indiana spoke on Socialistic issues and the protest against organized labor at Cayuga Monday evening May six nineteen hundred seven The meeting drew ten members and was deemed successful It was held through the efforts of the Clinton local.
A dispatch from Brazil reports Prof. C. C. Coleman of Clinton High School has been chosen by the school board as superintendent of Brazil public schools and will move there when his current term ends.
The Rathbone Sisters were very pleasant and sumptuously entertained last Thursday evening at the home of Mrs H C Dies. An elegant luncheon was served and the ladies departed with warm regards. The Reid and Salyarde families thank friends for their assistance during the recent fire.
The city high school will hold commencement at the opera house Friday evening May 24. Rev. Earle Wilfrey of Crawfordsville Ind will deliver the class address. Ten graduates are listed: five young ladies Anna Reese Hellen Wright Adina Carlson Olive You mans and five young men Henry Stark James Houston Luther Cloyd Earl Bullock Guy Cloyd.
The Jun iors of the class of '08 banqueted the Seniors at the home of their president Mr Schell Wright on Friday evening May 3. Guests included seniors Henry Stark Anna Reese Guy Cloyd Adina Carlson Luther Cloyd Earl Bullock Helen Wright Glenna Morgan James Houston and juniors Schell Wright Laura Ballard Arthur Michell Pauline Clark Ivan Huxford Grayce Porter Roy Cloyd Anna Davis Charles Clark Fern Lewis and faculty guests Superintendent Coleman Prof Lowe Mr Brower and Miss Hart. The hall was decorated in pink and white with carnations and pennons. A formal meal followed with toasts and songs. The evening ended around 2 o clock with seniors recalling the occasion fondly.
Clinton played an errorless, superior all around game to blank West Terre Haute 4 to 0 Sunday afternoon. Inclement weather kept attendance light as Clinton dominated on both sides.
Memorial services will be held in Clinton at the Christian church Sunday morning May 26 at the usual hour with Rev. C. E. Fowler delivering the sermon. Services at Centenary in the afternoon of the same day.
A foreign woman attempted death by own action by standing on the track to meet an approaching coal train on Tuesday morning. The engineer reacted quickly reversing the engine, stopping a few feet from her position, likely averting instant death.
Miss Alma Mooney is described as a happy girl after her father presented her with a pony, phaeton, and saddle as a generous gift.
Albert Kellogg was acquitted after a Wednesday trial for assault and battery with intent to commit a felony. The sole prosecuting witness testified, and the justice discharged Kellogg, declaring him not guilty and praising a prominent local business man.
