Pension cuts eyed as loans repaid by October
Director Adlam B Johnson and W A Little discuss pension policy amid a projected 40 percent reduction once the state begins repaying loans exceeding 2.1 million dollars in October. Proposals include prorating benefits or removing those receiving five to six dollars monthly. Recipients get up to 30 dollars monthly from federal and state funds based on need. Officials expect federal matching funds around mid month. Governor Daniel plans a special session to avert cuts by expanding revenue sources. No staff vacancies or major changes are planned, though a central Austin office may be sought at Camp Mabry.
