Lieut. Joe Te McNeill of Valley Mills earned the Air Medal for outstanding daylight raids over Europe with the Eighth Air Force. The 22 year old navigator described a Schweinfurt raid when 250 to 390 enemy fighters attacked. He recalled a July raid where a shell pierced the nose and an ammunition exit, and a Focke Wulf head on attack that exploded in flames. McNeill, son of Mr and Mrs J McNeill, attended Valley Mills High School and John Tarleton College before joining the Army Air Corps.
