Fruiting Plants Add Winter Color In Texan Gardens

Native trees and shrubs shed leaves as cold weather comes yet fruit remains for color. Dr. William Welch notes fall fruiting plants like yaupon, parsley hawthorn, and deciduous holly brighten landscapes and feed birds. Deciduous yaupon, or possum-naw holly, shows bright red to orange fruit on bare stems and tolerates varied soils. male plants are needed nearby for fruit set. Yaupon is common across Texas but often hard to find in nurseries.
