Boy plummets into well saved by quick Texas Central conductor

A baby boy of Mr. and Mrs. Lawson fell into an old well twenty to thirty feet deep while playing under a house. Conductor C. L. Webster descended by rope, calmed the child, and retrieved him unharmed. The rescue was witnessed as a remarkable act of bravery. The story also notes the couple’s wedding the prior Sunday and plans for a bridal tour before settling in Clifton.

Strayed and stolen animals haunt Gatesville notices

A fragmentary Gatesville Messenger item reports a brown mule and horse pair stolen from John Linberg’s pasture, valued at about 20 dollars. It also notes local chatter on a milling department worker resuming duties after a fever, plus a lengthy anecdotal comparison of circus excursion advertising and crowd counts for Ringling Bros. and the local show.

Bedside Charade and Civic Virtues From Old Letters

Fragment from a period piece recalling a courtship scene in which a young Lindy faces a formal proposal, a Bible text exchange, and a marriage that follows. It includes a tale of a New York governor William H. Seward’s upbringing, and notes on education, school aesthetics, and the value of order in a school setting. A local printer’s note about typographical errors ends the excerpt.
