Clifton's 1970 population is 2,469, up 144 from 1960, a 6.2 percent rise in a county where Bosque totals 10,372, down 437 from a decade ago. The Clifton Record and local leaders pressed for the count after the Census Bureau, under Robert C. Ford, stopped replying, prompting Congressman Poage to intervene in Washington.
Bosque County reports ongoing voter registration for 1971 with many applicants failing to sign their forms. The tax office mailed registration blanks with tax notices to boost convenience, but about one third returned unread or unsigned. Signatures are required to qualify. questions should be directed to the tax office, and forms are available there if not received by mail.
Curtis B. Adrian of Austin representing First Southwest Company outlined costs and bond plans for Clifton Independent School District’s Dec 1 election attended by 79 Clifton Lions Club members. He praised Clifton’s progress, explained how 70 percent of school funding comes from state and federal sources, and described two ballot propositions: maintenance tax and issuance of bonds with tax levy. He noted Clifton remains under the old 1949 law, needing the change to legally issue $800,000 in bonds and proposed boosting district valuation to $13 million to secure favorable interest rates.
The Clifton PTA and Clifton School Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. on November 19 to view plans and drawings for Clifton High School. The session in the school cafeteria will include representatives from Charless and Rucker Architects and Curtis Adrian of First Southwest Company to discuss floor plans, artist concepts, and the $800000 bond election set for December 1. A question and answer period will follow.
Lone Star Gas Co. home economist Mrs Dana Maxfield will present a free program on Christmas ideas in foods and decorations at Clifton City Hall Dining Room. The event on Thursday Nov 19 begins 2 30 p m and is sponsored by Bosque County Home Demonstration Clubs. Refreshments will follow.
The November term of Judge Trum Roberts 52nd Judicial District Court returned 19 true bills of indictment for felony offenses. Indictments cover murder burglary sodomy theft forgery DWI hot checks receiving stolen property with names including James K Palmer linked to a murder case in Meridian.
Clifton High School Cubs defeated the West Trojans 32 to 13 last Friday night in West to stay in the District 10-AA title race. The Cubs trailed 8 7 at halftime but surged in the second half with three touchdowns and 173 rushing yards to West 96. Wayne Dreyer Jim Canuteson and Jerry Kleine contributed key plays, with Wallace scoring the extra point.
Absentee voting starts today in the School Tax Office next to The Record in Clifton. Voting continues until November 25 1970 with ballots cast for the school bond measure.
The Goodall-Witcher Hospital Auxiliary will meet Tuesday night November 17 at 7 30 in the home of Mrs Roland Jones. Dr Goodall and Jim Smith will attend to discuss the new hospital in an informal period. All members and the general public are urged to attend.
