High school dropouts with military service may access a GI Bill perk not available to postwar fathers. VA Regional Director Jack Coker notes 36 months of college aid plus free entitlement months to finish high school or meet college entrance needs without reducing the 36 month limit. In fiscal year 1973, 129,086 veterans used free entitlement, nearly double the prior year. total beneficiaries reached 195,653 with about 10 percent still in training. Fertilizer and fuel shortages-edge farmers into next year

Texas A&M economist Dr. Michael Sprott warns farmers face tight supplies of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers and fuels next year. Causes include 62 million acres released from reserve, strong foreign fertilizer demand, dollar devaluation, and natural gas limits for ammonia production. Phosphate fertilizer may ease. nitrogen remains uncertain. LP gas shortfall could hinder crop drying this fall, with diesel adequate but gasoline tight. Government energy planners are prioritizing farmer fuel needs to avert losses.
