The American Legion auxiliary will sell poppies on Clifton Saturday in memory of World War I and II dead, living veterans, and families of veterans. Proceeds aid disabled veterans and families. poppies symbolize remembrance and support.
The 1944 Clifton Public School closing exercises will be held Friday evening at the City Auditorium. Reverend J P Paul will deliver the commencement address on What Shall I Do with My Life. The event marks the end of the school year with cultural and inspirational remarks by local dignitaries and honor for PF.
A pressure cooker clinic returns Saturday May 27 from 1 to 4 pm under the supervision of the agriculture and home economics teachers. Forty seven cookers were tested May 20 with only ten deemed accurate and safe. Models tested include All-American Watsoner Hubbard Ward National Health Kook Quick Automatic Bull Burpee Dixie Windsor. Ages ranged from one to 27 years. Defects included faulty gauges weak springs pitted nuts broken wing nuts damaged pins and worn treads.
E I du Pont de Nemours Co unveils a chemical method to convert soft wood into hardwoods, claiming rapid creation of ebony-like wood. The process could open vast timber resources, boost industrial activity, and create jobs by expanding use of underutilized Southern pine forests.
This week closes our school year with thanks to all who helped. On Friday the last day, buses run around 1:30 pm for the afternoon program. At 3:00 pm our high school baseball team plays the Gatesville Juvenile Training School team. A community supper follows and is available before students depart for home. Commencement exercises will be at 9:00 pm in the high school auditorium with Dr. Monroe B. Carroll of Baylor University as speaker. Fourteen seniors receive diplomas, including valedictorian Susannah Clydy, and others: Melon Paulina Brews and more.
Corral Jack Hill letters from Ocean Side Marine unit praise hometown Record. He notes receiving the weekly paper while away, saying it lifts spirits and keeps him connected to the community. The draft letter highlights pride in the drive and the town's support through scrap collection efforts.
The Vocational Department announces a Farm Machinery Repair course at Clifton High School. Mr. Bryan Moore returns as instructor and will lead students in using the shop facilities. The course invites students and district residents to bring in equipment for repair and learn through hands on practice.
John Lyon graduates from the Texan class 46-0 at STROTHER ARMY FIELD Kansas May 26 with Uncle Slim’s aviation cadets. After 10 hours aloft in Vultee Valiants and 9.5 weeks of ground and instrument instruction these cadets move to advanced single engine pursuit or twin engine bomber training with commissions in the Army Air Corps and silver wings in sight.
The Central Texas Camp and Hospital Council met at South Camp Hood on Thursday May 18 with Bosque County representation. The gathering showcased the camp's generous day room, hospital supplies, and service clubs aiding soldiers and families. A luncheon at the officers club followed a guided tour of Camp Hood and McCloskey Hospital highlighting the scale and needs of the facility.
Judge Floyd Ziegler of Gatesville spoke to about 96 Lions Club members at City Hall Dining Room. He urged balance in wartime efforts, praising mothers with sons in service and urging more war aid. New officers were named as nominations closed, and six local youths depart May 26 for Camp Walters.
Clifton hosts a five day Red Cross Blood Donor Unit led by Major George D Feldner. Donors from Valley Mill, Coyote, Coons Creek and Clifton contribute hundreds of pints with weekly totals from Walnut Springs and Meridian. Volunteers, civic groups and local businesses provide meals and staffing as residents age 18 to 59 donate to aid wounded service members overseas.
