The Record notes the community is over its $1100 Red Cross campaign goal as donations come in generously. The drive continues through Saturday night and all residents are urged to contribute if not yet reached. A list of donors will be published next week.
May 12 was set for Moteh Day but high school commencement conflicted. Next Sunday afternoon May 26 at 3 30 o clock the Methodist Church hosts a special Old Folks Service with Rev J A Didd preaching and familiar hymns. All churches invited to cooperate.
Senator Tillman closed his address at the South Carolina Democratic convention with a fiery statement against German sympathizers and a pledge of support for Woodrow Wilson he urged the people to understand his position on the war. He urged clear public stands amid wartime tensions and political unity within the party.
In Clifton precinct the forty thousand dollar road bond passed by a good majority with 224 votes for and 102 against. The issue funds the Meridian Highway and tributary roads, benefiting the entire precinct. Four county precincts voted on similar bonds. Meridian failed to reach two thirds by twelve votes and may call a new election in thirty days.
Farmers Guaranty State Bank cashier J. M. Jenson says a circulated report claiming the bank bars aid to bond voters is false. He states the bank’s policies are not based on voting stance and affirms equal treatment for all customers.
Auto tires garden hose and other old rubber accepted for Red Cross relief. Drop off at Clifton Garage from May 20 to 27 for the fundraiser.
Jack Parnum, longtime organist at the Lutheran Church in Waco, Texas, died of shell wounds in a French hospital after earlier being wounded in action. A London cable announced his death to his mother, Mrs. E. M. Parnum, while a prior message noted the serious wound. Parnum had boasted he would never be captured, a claim now tied to his death in the World War. Local Clifton residents recall his recital on the new pipe organ last summer.
No Sunday School next Sunday. Confirmation Service in English at 10:00 AM. An offering for the Home Mission will be taken. Baccalaureate Service at 8:30 PM. Rev C T Jensen camp pastor at Camp Travis Texas will preach. Cordial invitation extended to all.
Service battery available at Gilliam's service station for 25 cents a day. Customer can purchase the battery on site.
J N Colwick reported in Clifton that the Norse community subscribed 600 dollars in two days toward the Red Cross drive, a hundred over their quota. They will proceed with the picnic and auction in E T Colwick pasture next Saturday, with proceeds to benefit the local Red Cross ladies for necessities.
The High School Auditorium presents Mrs Tubbs Does Her Bit on Thursday June 6 at 8 30 p.m. The same cast as Mrs Tubbs of Shanty Town returns and admission is 15 and 25 cents.
Miss Etta Maye Parks hosted a Tuesday afternoon slumber party for her female friends. Attendees included Odell Majors Lois Rea Maye Golden Maddie Lee Little Callie Mae Garrett Emma Mae Minaland Mamie Swenson Zenobia Schow Geraldine Hooper Anna Marie Olson Erna Glass.
Clifton Garage invites the public to donate old auto tires and rubber during Red Cross week May 20 through May 27. Items will be sold to benefit the Red Cross, supporting relief efforts.
The college hosts a week of events from May 26 to May 31. Activities include a Sunday bac calaureate at the Lutheran Church preached by Rev. C. T. Jenson, a concert May 28, Alumni meeting May 29, a class program May 30, and commencement exercises May 31 with Rev. Hugo B. Heterius delivering the address.
General Crowder reports Congress has enacted mass registration for men who turned 21 since June 5 last and a presidential proclamation will designate June 5 1918 as the registration day. Bosque County registrants must appear June 5 1918 at the Meridian County Courthouse between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. for local board supervision, with failure to register punishable under the Selective Service act.
J. K. Proffitt suffered serious injuries Thursday when his car was struck by a Santa Fe freight train at a city crossing near Meridian road. He was knocked unconscious with head and facial wounds, transported to Drs Carpenter & Carpenter, later home, with no broken bones expected and a swift recovery hoped for by friends.
