Bosque County backs Bentsen in May primary

In Bosque County the May 2 Democratic Primary crowned Lloyd Bentsen over incumbent Ralph Yarborough with a near 2 to 1 margin. Local runoff headlines focus on J Paul Howard and W L Gauntt of Clifton who must contest the June 6 second primary after Howard’s 548 votes fell short of a combined lead. Roy Welborn received 332 votes.

Clifton Lime Quarry Plans 250 Ton Kiln Expansion

Chemical Lime stone Products Inc announces Clifton quarry expansion adding a 250 ton per day rotary kiln for calcining limestone into quicklime and hydrate facilities. Production begins Feb 1 1971 with 35 new jobs. general manager is Tom D Chambers.

Clifton School District approves new Cub Stadium bleachers

Trustees vote unanimously to buy and erect 1024 additional seats at Cub Stadium increasing capacity from 120 by 15 to 90 by 19 rows. The Sturdhsteel Company of Waco will erect the 1024 seat addition for 10850 total, with 1900 for erection and warranty coverage.

Local Guardsmen Plan Operation Clean and Green

National Guardsmen from 1st Rifle and Weapons Platoon Co A 143d Infantry will join an state wide effort on May 17 to collect litter. The Clifton unit, 65 members, will focus on highways 6 and 22 and the city park area in Clifton. Participation is voluntary. See GUARDSMEN, Page 6-A.

Transfer Students to Clifton Schools Asked To Contact Mr Appleby

Clifton School Supt Kent Appleby asks all students wishing to transfer to the Clifton Independent School District from another district to contact him during May before May 31 1970. The new law allows students to attend school outside their home district but administrators need to know who they are how many they are and their subject requirements to plan for the next year.

584 Girls Vaccinated in Local Rubella Program

County nurse Mrs. James Burch announces 584 school girls received the Rubella vaccine in a local drive to eradicate the disease. Breakdowns show Clifton and Mosheim 319, Meridian Iredell and Crawfills Gap 179, Morgan Koppers and Walnut Springs 86. Valley Mills had programs earlier.

Clifton High School announces the top scholastic students for the 1969-70 graduating class. Valedictorian David Reesing with 95.075 average and salutatorian Betty Gail Conrad at 94.209 lead a group including Clint White Allen Aars Linda Sparks Charlotte King and Rita Willmann with averages from 90 up. Meridian Baptist Churches to Build Dorm at Latham Springs

The Meridian Baptist Association, comprising nineteen Southern Baptist Churches in Bosque County, announces the start of a new dormitory at Latham Springs Baptist Encampment near Smith Bend. The 76 by 36 foot, single wall haydite block building will sleep forty, with twenty per end, featuring concrete foundation and a concrete floor.

Pre School Round-Up Slated Here May 8th

Clifton Elementary School will host a Pre School Round-Up in Bettis Auditorium on Friday May 8 at 1 15 p m. The event invites children who will start school next September and their parents for an orientation led by School Counselor Mrs Homer Spence followed by a refreshment in the school cafeteria.

Clifton Youth Baseball League postponed Tuesday meeting to Thursday May 7 at 7 30 PM at City Hall to finalize plans. Two managers needed for freshman and pee wee teams. The 18th Lake Whitney Beauty Pageant draws record crowds with 90 total entries and 53 conteste rs in Jr Miss event. Linda Waggoner crowns the 1970 winner from 37 Senior entries as Bosque County contestants compete. Lions Club Elects New Officers at Clifton meeting
