Conference actions push bills through committees this week
In Washington and Texas politics swirl as conference committees hammer out differences on Selective Service, OPA, and the Present’s Emergency Labor bill. A draft compromise extends the draft to 44, with a 1,590,000 ceiling, later reduced to 1,070,000 by July 1947, and preserves farm deferments. The pay of enlisted men may rise up to 50 percent to boost enlistments. The House also votes to curb the national debt and funds flood control along the Llano River near Belton, signaling progress on long‑delayed projects and farm protection for the Live River bottoms in Milam and Bosque counties.
