Local outlets report changes to Saturday night hours as merchants adjust operations for the holiday season. Shoppers are advised to verify store times before visiting as some downtown retailers extend or reduce evening hours.
Lieut W A Wegner, now Liat Wegner, moved from Camp Wolters to an Enemy Alien Camp near Lordshue Mexico. He will serve in duties related to German and Japanese language tasks, with the move following a bedside visit to his ill father. The destination is about eight hundred miles from Clifton and is described as lonely with limited personnel arriving.
The following men have been called for induction on June 30, 1942: Henry Bridger, Clinton Rex Leonard, Cranville Gap, B. Donell Davenport, Moxbatm 1H. Otw Ender, Clifton, De, and Mrs. S L Witcher were picked and visited with relatives and sent to Port Worth.
Civil Aeronautics Administration seeks American Legion help to recruit 13 350 pilots for the Army Air Forces. Training to begin by July 1 1942 aims to prepare glider, service and liaison pilots, inspectors and air corps recruits. Applicants aged 18 to of 40 may apply through local Legion posts with forms held by post leaders.
Oscar Winfield a farmer near Ipoine south of town turned hunter of fish with a 27 pound yellow catfish he hooked at the bank of the Banque river. He subdued the fish from a steep bank with forked stick and was aided by friends who shared portions of the catch. He previously landed a 20 pound catfish in the same hole weeks earlier and hinted at an even larger one escaping before capture. Local residents congratulate him on his luck and success at the water’s edge. NOTICE TO SUGAR CONSUMERS Sugar ration advisory urges Clifton residents to move canning sugar purchases away from Saturday and use weekdays to avoid crowding the sugar rosters.
Monday June 20 will be regular City Clean-Up Day the City Waxes will collect trash and refuse on that day. Citizens are urged to prepare convenient pickup by placing trash out for collection. The note calls for cooperation to keep the town cleaner and better.
Local USO campaign urges community support to meet a July quota. The notice lists several individuals connected to the effort and references a public service hospital project.
The Lions Club in Clifton elected new officers for the upcoming year at a luncheon hosted by the First Presbyterian Church last Tuesday. New officers include A. L. Bronstad as President and Hugh H. Trotter as First Vice President, with other posts filled by S. L. Witcher, Halen C. Aurs, L. E. Tennison, and H. E. Stewart among the slate. The club also discussed war-time community efforts such as scrap iron drive, food stamp plans, rationing duties, and banner naming restrictions for aviators.
Mrs. O W Emmons of St. Louis and her husband visited Clifton for the first time in ten years, reuniting with relatives including Mrs. George Oswald. Emmons, formerly Elle Shepert, left Clifton after her first husband Bud Duke’s death and spent a decade in St. Louis in the printing business. The reunion occurred amid a large Texas family gathering as Emmons planned further visits with kin and old friends.
Joe T. McComah Jr and Gordon W. Simpson of Valley Mills were named Helper Trainees at Corpus Christi Naval Air Station by the Civil Service Commission at 120.3 dollars a month. They had prior NYA War Work Center experience in repair, construction, and maintenance of airplanes and engines and were referred by the United Brule Employment Service.
Womack with Henry Hater as chairman led Bosque County towns in surpassing their USC War Campaign quotas. Waco-like towns Crawfills Gap and Meridian report strong overages as others quickly catch up. The drive aims to finish by the deadline with all quotas met.
The V-Mail system, a joint Post Office War and Navy initiative, launches to speed letters between U.S. armed forces abroad and families at home. Letters travel via domestic posting with special envelopes, then are photographed or micro filmed for overseas delivery, reducing volume and weight while preserving delivery.
The civ improvement Society will meet next Wednesday July 1 at 8 30 in the City Auditorium. All members urged to attend and stay for the after meeting dialogues in the sudivarium where attendees may be entertained by the Towers for the attendance contest winners.
County local board announces June 30 town registrations at seven sites Meridian Iredell Koppert Walnut Spring Valley Mille Crawfills Gap Clifton starting 7 am. All males born Jan 1 1922 through June 30 1924 must register. No questionnaires or physicals planned. accuracy urged.
Local Church of Christ assigns minister Mack Stirman to lead evangelistic work across multiple Texas sites starting July with stops in Gatesville Barry and Walnut Springs and extending to Nevada Missouri and adjacent towns. Mrs Stirman and two daughters will visit relatives in Waco Chilton and Sifton between meetings.
Mrs J L Standefer hosts the J O Y Bridge Club on Friday afternoon June 4. Members and guests enjoyed games with Mrs E Parker and Mew as second high and Lottie Bettie as high. A delicious salad course followed with many club members and guests in attendance. Panama extends governing control of food facilities.
Clifton youths Feecher and Geremah Re Cangyantore receive Lone Star Farmer Degree recognition. Details from the meeting indicate the awards honor outstanding agricultural scholarship and community service, marking a notable local achievement for extending farming knowledge.
