American Officer Killed on Mexican Border Patrol
Lieut. David J. Schaile of the 16th U. S. Cavalry was killed in a night encounter with Mexican troops on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande near Brownsville Texas. Four of Schaile’s men were captured in Matamoros and later expected to be returned to U. S. authorities. The group had crossed the river to search for a drowned soldier’s body from the San Benito pump. Mexican forces fired in the darkness, officials say due to a misunderstanding, and Schaile was killed. The body was to be returned today.
