A sudden death occurred at 1 20 am Saturday May 2 in Valley Mills. E A Tweedy aged 61, born October 14 1883, was a prominent Valley Mills merchant and farm community figure. He survived by his widow, daughter Mrs Allison B Clark, one grandson Thomas Allison, a brother Albert Smith Tweedy, two visitors, and many nieces and nephews. He had recently operated a reaper when bitten by a rattler. a heart attack followed. He was a longtime First Baptist member and leader, with ties to Baylor University and local missions boards.

Cpl Merrill Sparks, son of Mr and Mrs J A Sparks of Clifton Texas, received the Philippines Liberation Medal from the Commonwealth Government for his role in fighting on Legte and Lucan in Pangasinan province Luzon. Major General William H Gill announced the award. Sparks has been overseas since April 1962 with A Battery 120th Field Artillery Battalion of the Red Arrow Division, currently in northern Luzon. He is also entitled to wear the Pacific Theater ribbon with one battle star.
