Six Bosque County 4 H Club members Joyce Blackman Bettye Viertel Keb Viertel John Kruse Rodney Kraxe and Darle Simmons were selected to attend the State Junior Leadership Training Laboratory at Lake Brownwood on August 27 The program sponsored by United Gas and Agricultural Extension Service has funded more than 2 000 trips to Texas 4 H members over its 16 year run Joyce Blackman 15 a Meridian resident is a long time 4 H member and has held multiple offices She is a sophomore at Cranfills Gap High School and has earned awards in canning dairy foods and dress reverses Bettye Viertel 18 and Red Viertel 14 are Cranfills Gap youths who have led 4 H clubs and held county offices Bettye is a Gold Star recipient and has leadership pins Darla Simmons 16 a Cranfills Gap member has served as reporter treasurer and delegate She won landscape plant ID and state coop demonstration recognition Rodney Kruse 15 and John Kruse 17 of MeGregor High School hold solid 4 H records and accolades in cattle and farm management demonstrations.

Clifton Senior Baseball Team Grabs Second in Cen-Tex Playoffs

The Clifton seniors, led by manager Alton Helier and assistant Angus Odle, finish runner up in the Cen-Tex Teenage League after a 13-1 loss to West at Hillsboro. West wins the best two of three and advances to Area Playoffs at Kiwanis Field in Waco on Monday August 2, with first pitch at 5:30 p.m.

Mooney and wife to present benefit show for Clifton Lions

William P Mooney and his wife Valerie Goodall will stage a benefit performance in Bettis Auditorium Clifton to aid the Clifton Lions Club. The 8 pm Tuesday show features Mrs Goodall an Aix Graz Opera alumna and Mooney a touring one man act Half Horse and Half Alligator. Proceeds go to the Clifton Lions Club funds.

Clifton Red Peewees Win Neils Creek League Title

Clifton Red Peewees won the Peewee A League championship by beating Valley Miller Blue Peewee 97 to 0 last Thursday. Pitchers Rusty Benfer and Lloyd Wied and catcher John Grimland led the Reds in the title game. The Clifton Freshmen will travel Thursday to Renbrook for regional playoffs at 6 30 p m facing the Brazos Valley League winner.

Meeting at Grace Memorial Baptist Church July 28

The Meridian Baptist Associational meeting met Monday night at Grace Memorial Baptist Church.Clay L Burns opened the program with introductions and scripture read by Ovie Dittrich. Reverend Flowers from Iredell spoke on witnessing and received an attendance banner for his church. A meal followed hosted by Grace Memorial.

Major and Mrs Oscar Prince with their sons Bobby and Phil arrived Tuesday for a family visit at the Warren W Prince home. Major Prince recently finished duty at Yokota Air Base Japan and will head to the Pentagon in Washington DC. Mrs Hanson 80 Dies at Clifton Sunset Home

Mrs C Hanson died at Memorial Hall in the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home on July 23 after falling asleep following an evening of watching television. Born in Lillisend Norway on September 1 1884 she married Carl Hanson in 1911 and had two daughters Agnes and Spivey. She lived in Clifton most of her life, first with her brother O Orbeck and later in her East 7th Street home.

Clifton Girls Attend Twirling School at Southern Methodist University

Mrs. Jack R. Hill Mrs. W T Holder and Mrs. Louis Outlaw accompanied seven Clifton High School girls to Dallas last Sunday to attend twirling school through Friday. Readied for the Clifton Band next year are Peggy Berry Kathy Collins Marsha Hill Janet Holder Vicky Outlaw Bonnie June Standefer and Anita Wallace. Marsha and Janet will attend a Methodist Youth Fellowship Conference at Texas Wesleyan College in Fort Worth on Friday. Reverend Simpson Returns Home From Colorado Pastors' School

Reverend Walter R Simpson Jr pastor of Zion United Church of Christ at Womack spent from July 13 to 23 at Colorado State University Fort Collins Colorado attending the Town and Country Pastors' Leadership School. It was his third consecutive summer at the Pastors' School and he completed the course with the session held this month.

Brother of Don Howard Die in Tank Tragedy Near Mallamar

Sid Howard 49 of Mallamar New Mexico died July 22 in a Great Western Drilling base tank battery along with two young employees Lonnie Love age 21 and Roy Wilson age 18. The trio were overcome by hydrogen sulfide fumes while cleaning an oil stock tank. Funeral services were held July 25 at Lovington with interment in Artesia. Survived by wife four children parents four brothers and three sisters. Don Howard and daughter Ethel attended services.

David E Schmidt Dies After Auto Crash in Central Texas

David E Schmidt 23 of Valley Mills died at Hillcrest Hospital Waco at 7 30 p.m. July 22 from injuries from a crash earlier that week when his car struck a culvert at the Crawford intersection of Highway 6 between Waco and Valley Mills about 1 15 a m July 18 He was a son of Herbert R Schmidt and Flora Ida Wessinger Schmidt born March 1 1942 near Clifton A Valley Mills graduate and former teammate in sports He worked in Boise Idaho 1960 61 and at Rocketdyne Plant McGregor in 1963 He married Linda Carol Mingus on September 17 1960 in Waco They had one son Matthew.

Clifton's volunteer fire department answered two grass fire calls this week. The first occurred Tuesday night near Cedar Creek at Lake Whitney and the second Wednesday morning near Dunbar School northeast of Clifton.

Clifton Fans Enjoy Astrodome Trip To Reds Victory

Sixteen Clifton residents joined Central Texas Bus Lines for a Sunday trip to Houston. The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Houston Astros 3 to 4. Travelers included Mr and Mrs John D Fenn and son Jerald Mr and Mrs Archie Nelson and son Kenneth Gene Mr and Mrs Otto Gangsher Mr and Mrs Joe Stacha Mr and Mrs Wendell Bearden Misses Joyce and Margaret Cash E E Raley and Oliver Reesing who departed Waco Sunday morning.
