Jumbo Hubbard Sought Texas Governor Nomination Yet Lost
Texas Democrats faced five days of ballot gridlock on July 22 1878 in Houston as they failed to nominate Richard Bennett Hubbard Jr for governor. Hubbard a Harvard educated, 300 pounder known as Jumbo had led Texas politics since the 1850s and hoped for the 1873 Coke-Hubbard era's four year term but the convention chose Oran Roberts after postponing the vote.
