Clifton All-Star Football Tickets On Sale

Clifton High School announces $2 tickets for the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Football Game set for Thursday night August 4 at Rice Stadium Houston. Star halfback James Haywood joins the North Squad after two seasons at Clifton and a football scholarship to Navarro Junior College. Clifton coaches Roberts Whitehurst and Liardon will attend the coaching school in early August.

Mrs John Bell of Beaumont Killed in Traffic Crash

Mrs Vera Krueger Bell, 44, of Beaumont died after a car crash six miles west of Corrigan in Polk County on Saturday afternoon July 16. Her husband, John Bell, 25th wedding anniversary pending, remained critically ill in Houston with skull fracture. Their daughter Wanda, 11, survived after escaping the wreck and seeking help. The family had been en route to visit relatives for supper when a buzzard struck the windshield causing the car to leave the road and hit a tree.

Fire Department Answers Two Calls This Week

The Clifton Volunteer Fire Department answered two alarms including a grass fire at the Odell Rowe place in Fairview southeast of Clifton and a car fire involving Mrs. Jean Marvin Reeder’s 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 parked near the hospital. The grass blaze burned a field and fence posts. the vehicle fire caused wiring and air conditioning damage but was not extinguished immediately.

Meridian Rodeo Set for July Open Events and Parade

Meridian Horse Show Association to sponsor an Open Rodeo July 28 29 30 with events nightly at 8 00. A Friday downtown parade kicks off at 5 30 and George Haynes Rodeo Company will produce the shows. Prizes include club rider awards and individual entries. entries open July 27 noon by calling GE5 2802.

Clifton Police Report Traffic Citations and Accidents

Clifton Chief Eldon Forbess issued seven traffic tickets during the week of July 10 to 16 for loud mufflers improper starting disregarding stop signs improper turning and other offenses. He investigated two accidents including a Saturday night collision on South Highway 6 near the Dairy King involving a 1956 Chevrolet and a 1966 Chevrolet with no injuries and minimal damage.

Softball Meeting Scheduled Friday

A Friday night meeting at 7 30 at the Educational Building of the First Methodist Church in Clifton will plan another round of Church Softball League games. All interested persons are urged to attend.

Eighteen Bosque County 4-H girls competed in the 1966 Dress Review held July 15 at Meridian High School. Bettye Viertel led seniors with blue ribbon and high points, while Susan Jones topped juniors. both advance to District 8 at Tarleton State College on August 12.

Queen Candidates Introduced for 1966 Bosque County Queen Contest

Bosque County Farm Bureau members and friends met at Meridian Lake on July 19 for a social with a watermelon feast and candidate introductions. Five 1966 queen hopefuls were named: Donna Aars, Fran Arthur, Marilyn Erickson, Melanie Muir, and Billye Carol Sanders. Miss Martha Smith, 1965 queen, attended and reflected on her reign. The queen contest is set for August 4 at 8:00 p.m. in the Bettis Auditorium, Clifton Public Schools.

Bosque County Survey Explores Country Club Interest

A Bosque County survey seeks interest in a proposed county country club. Plans call for a central site near the population hub with dues 5 to 10 dollars monthly and a 50 dollar enrollment fee. The project could be funded by the Aiken Poage Bill, allowing 1000 dollars per signed member at 5 percent over 40 years.

Clifton Freshmen Invited to Stephenville Tournament

Clifton Black Freshman Team, winner of the Neils Creek League of Texas Teen-Age Baseball, accepted an invitation to the Freshman Invitational Tournament in Stephenville next week. The field includes four Stephenville teams, one each from Comanche and Valley Mills, and an eighth unnamed squad. Clifton’s first match date and opponent are not yet set. A Friday practice game against the Clifton Reds is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at City Park.

Women Organize Local Softball Teams in Clifton

Clifton women and girls formed two softball teams to enjoy the sport and exercise. They meet on Saturday nights and invite any able-bodied woman to join. Notable players include Betty Brown as captain, Norida Culp, Diantha Phillips, and Ruthy Lee.

Teachers Attend Reading Conference in Nacogdoches

Four Clifton Public Schools teachers Jenson Miles Dahl Arn left Wednesday for Nacogdoches to attend a Reading Conference at Stephen F. Austin State College. The event is part of a Texas statewide series sponsored by the Texas Association for Improvement of Reading.
