Bosque County considers a new jail to handle summer arrest surges and public intoxication cases. Current 35 bed facility, built 1978 and renovated 1988, strains operations with average weekly arrests and limited female cells. Jails runs at 35 inmates, with female daily average 5.83 and transport load around 2.6 inmates daily.
Clifton Bosque County American Cancer Society Relay for Life invites general participation with a kickoff on Friday January 29 from 6 30 to 8 30 p m at the Clifton Civic Center. Attendees may register a team for 15 dollars, vote on the theme, and relive last year’s record event. The Bosque County Relay will occur May 7 8 from 7 p m to 7 a m. Clifton Chamber of Commerce and Sales4Souls sponsor a shoe drive to send gently worn shoes and flip flops to Haiti. Donations should be brought to the chamber office, tied with rubber bands, with optional messages of hope.
Clifton VFW Post 8553 will hold its Fifth Friday Fish Fry starting at 5 p.m. Friday January 29. Funds from the meals support community projects. The $8 meal includes a child option. the post is at 215 North Ave D in downtown Clifton.
Clifton report: A two vehicle collision on Highway 6 at the FM 3220 intersection left one person injured. Details are sparse as officers investigate the crash scene.
One person was hospitalized with injuries after a 2008 Jetta driven by Jason Cluder entered Hwy 6 off FM 3220 and was struck by a 2004 Dodge pickup driven by Justin Markworth. Clifton Police say witnesses saw the Dodge run the red light. Fire crews used the Jaws of Life to free a trapped occupant before transport by North Bosque EMS.
The last day to register or change address is Monday February 1 2010. To vote you need a current Voter Registration Card or valid ID. Early voting in person is at Bosque County Courthouse Meridian begins February 16 and ends February 19.
Womack Lodge 135 of the Sons of Hermann hosted an officer installation for five lodges on Saturday January 16 including Womack Priddy Shive Waco Robinson and McGregor Lodges. Grand Lodge officers Oscar Oswald and Sandra Jones installed officers and Jones spoke on the order history and Texas lodges. Calvin Rueter recapped Texas lodge origins and noted two area lodges with Womack highlighted.
