A January dispatch reports a letter received by the Texas governor containing Bolshevik threats. The strange text was found to be in Bobessian and later translated from German to English by an elderly woman. The message asked the governor to wish a happy New Year amid repetitive stylings and odd passages.
A Southern farming note urges farmers to boost home food and grass production rather than expand cotton. It cites Dr Bradford Knapp and warns against gambling on cotton in 1920, stressing lower feeding costs and self sufficiency. It promotes selling remnant cotton locally and advertises RD'S Horehound Syrup.
Local notes from Valley Mills include visitors from Morgan and Clifton, funeral arrivals for J. L. Preston, and several residents ill or recovering. Teachers, farmers, and merchants move about town while Uncle Jonathan Preston and Uncle Albert Morris pass away, and residents adjust to road conditions and repairs.
The United States Department of Agriculture reports broom corn should be sown in the flat half of May or the last half of June to avoid the hot dry mid August period. Rows should be 7 feet apart with two plants per hill or 3 to 4 feet spacing in the row, as no advantage shown in wider spacing. Harvesting should occur while weeds are in the wing stage for higher yield and better quality. early or late harvests gave less satisfactory results.
