Galileo telescope reveals Moon's mountains and craters
In December 1609 Galileo began telescopic studies of the Moon, challenging Aristotelian views. He observed uneven terrain, shadows implying mountains about four miles high, and craters from meteor impacts. He explained earthshine as sunlight reflecting from Earth. The piece notes lunar phase details and a January sky calendar with dates, planetary positions, and a local star party hosted by the Central Texas Astronomical Society in Waco.
