A major fire at a Clifton station injures Reed Carr and Sendery Smith while Leo Webards helps with equipment. Firefighters halt spreading flames despite gasoline tanks detonating risk, and owner Holmpson notes no building clearance. Local volunteers battle the blaze, preventing wider devastation.
William Allen Hancock born February 19 1873 died at his Clifton home early Saturday after a brief illness. He was a highly honored Clifton citizen and longtime business man from Hico. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Methodist Church with Rev Wallace Dunson officiating. Entombment followed in Midveme. Hancock married Josephine Autray on November 16 1904 and left a family of three sons and one daughter.
Mrs. Amos A. Eggen died December 28 at age 88 after a life of family devotion. Born of Ada Christenson, she grew up under church influence and married Amos A. Eggen in 1912, raising sons Opel Troy Amos Claire and Joe. She was a faithful member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, survived by husband and children, plus siblings and in laws.
Miss LaVerne Oswald wed L E McQuinn on a Sunday December ceremony at First Baptist Church. Rev. Dawson officiated with Mr and Mrs G Bronstad of Clifton as the sole attendants. The bride wore a long wedding gown with pleated sleeves and a veil of lace. Mr McQuinn attended Southwest Tennessee State Teachers College and is employed locally. the couple plans to reside in the area.
Clifton visitors were injured in a highway accident. The incident details are unclear from the fragment, but responders treated the injured at the scene and transported them for medical evaluation.
Julius Storie, born in Norway, died at his Clifton home on New Year’s Eve after years of illness. He was about 82, lived in Gufton area for fifty years, respected and widowed with three daughters and two sons. Funeral set for 10 o’clock morning at the Clifton family home with Rev. Walter F. Inarment to conduct.
Postmaster Frank C. Walker announces a six cent per half ounce airmail rate for mail to and from armed forces personnel stationed outside the continental United States. The rate for Alaska remains six tenths of a cent per ounce. Civilian mail to those points is not affected. To qualify, addresses must show rank and unit. Parcels to forces abroad use fourth class zone rates between sending and port of shipment. A L Bropstad, Postmaster.
A tea shower was hosted by Mrs Ele Huxley prior to her marriage last April. The event at the Church of Christ featured guests greeted by Mrs Robert Baldridge and included Mr. and Mrs Clarence Carniar. The occasion followed an earlier reception at the home of Mrs Johnie Met.
The Cubs won 21 to 17 against Turnersville at 9 oclock and beat Meridian 20 to 7 at 6 PM. They then lost 15 to 26 to Jonesboro. On December 9 they defeated Marlin 20 to 19, lost the return at Marlin 14 to 21, and beat Crayford 27 to 14. Upcoming homers at Clifton and many away games are listed with dates through February.
Mrs. F P Langhart aged 70 or 71 was found dead in her bedroom at the home of Mrs. Rosa Turner in west Clifton by a grocery delivery boy. Death attributed to natural causes, possibly two hours prior, with Justice of the Peace Henry Gray and attending physician confirming. Interment at Meridian Cemetery conducted by Elder Mack Stirman. Born Rhoda James McCollhiny July 24 1869 in Catahoula Parish La, daughter of Mary McCollum, married Fred P Tie on November 5 1890.
