Slaughter of Cattle to Rise Amid High Costs and Low Feeder Prices
Livestock experts forecast a sharp rise in cattle slaughter through 1975 as high fed costs and weak feeder prices push more grass fed cattle to market. Ed Uvacek of Texas A&M Extension notes non fed and grass fed steer and heifer slaughter could jump 56 percent, with calf slaughter up 39 percent and cow slaughter 42 percent. Total head moved to slaughter expected at 42 million, a 14 percent rise, signaling a shrinking beef herd and sustained low prices.
