Manure as an alternative fertilizer amid shortages
Texas Agricultural Extension Service expert Dr. John Sweeten says fertilizer shortages may push farmers to manure. Large feedlots in the High Plains supply manure at about 1 to 1.50 dollars per ton plus transport, with composting improving spread and reducing weed seeds. Studies show yield gains up to 125 percent from manure in Panhandle trials, and recommendations suggest about 5 to 10 tons per acre depending on year and nitrogen availability.
