James Franklin Norfleet of Hale County exposed a bold fraud by Reno Hamlin and five partners led by Joe Furey. After $800 became $28,000 and then $45,000 vanished, Norfleet pursued the swindlers across states, aided by lawmen and family. He spent five years and $75,000, dying in 1967 at age 92.
