Lost Papers No Bar To Benefits
VA regional office director Jack Coker says lost birth certificates or marriage licenses won’t block benefits. Since 1971 informal proofs of birth and marriage suffice to establish claims for compensation and education benefits for veterans widows and orphaned children. A veteran or widow’s certified statement of marriage is acceptable if no prior marriage by either spouse and no contradictory VA records. A certified birth statement is also acceptable to prove a child’s age and relationship to a veteran.
