Miss Rawls Seeks District Queen Title in Temple Contest

Paula Rawls of Valley Mills is Bosque County Farm Bureau Queen and will compete in the District Farm Bureau Queen Contest at the Hawn Hotel Temple Saturday night at 8 30 Johnny Watkins of KWTX TV Waco will host. Rawls moved to Bosque County from San Saba three years ago and is a Valley Mills High School junior active in Future Homemakers of America and church youth activities. She will appear on KCEN TV Temple program Friday at noon.

Clifton Jaycee-Ettes Name Officers In City Hall Meeting

The Clifton Jaycee Ettes met at City Hall Tuesday night August 25 to elect officers for the fiscal year. Elected were Mrs Jimmy N Andrews president Mrs W F Key Jr 1st vice president Mrs Charles Fehler Jr 2nd vice president Mrs Clyde Seljos secretary Mrs Edward Bryn treasurer Mrs Aubrey Roberts parliamentarian Mrs T F Crawford state director Mrs Douglas Railsback historian and Mrs Jimmy Jones publicity director. The group will meet the third Tuesday of each month at a location to be decided. Mrs A O Swenson fell at home Tuesday morning sustaining a broken back and rib and is receiving treatment in the local hospital with hopes for a quick recovery.

Central Texas Fair plans prize boost for youth livestock show

Waymon Davis announced $2600 in prize money for the Junior Livestock Division at the 1959 Central Texas Fair to be held in September. Entries will come from Bosque County and seven surrounding counties. Clifton Lions Club members heard a financial report on the fair and emphasized boosting membership and parade participation to attract strong town publicity.

Pep Squad to Meet at Clifton High Friday Evening

Clifton High School pep squad members and incoming freshmen are scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. meeting Friday at the school. The first pep rally invites all students to attend at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in front of Service Drug Store downtown. Clifton’s Cubs host Hillsboro the next night in Hillsboro. Clifton Schools Open Sept 4 After Equipment Delay

Clifton Public Schools will open for the 1959 1960 year Friday September 4 at 8 30 A M instead of September 1 due to a new cafeteria kitchen equipment delay caused by a Fort Worth plant strike. Dunbar colored school opens September 1. Pre opening days include faculty meetings and grade level registrations August 31 to September 2. Lunch prices rise five cents for upper grades while lower grades stay at 25 cents. Improvements include new classrooms a larger kitchen bus shed updated roofs and repairs across the district with new staff assignments listed.

Hansons Grow bumper cane for trench silo on Clifton farm

Jeff S A Hanson Oliver Hanson and family in the Mustang area west of Clifton plan a trench silo to store a cane crop yielding about 16 000 pounds per acre. They expect to fill a 300 foot long silo with 400 tons of silage for 90 Polled Hereford cows aided by Oliver and Mrs. Oliver Hanson and other help. Modern farming helps Bosque County farmers stockpile feed in dry years.

First 1959 cotton bale brought to Clifton gin

W. T. Whitley of Route 2 Clifton delivered the first 1959 bale weighing 500 pounds with 1 810 pounds of seed cotton yielding 900 pounds of seed. Henry Knust of Route 1 Clifton followed the next morning after learning a bale was on hand. Farmers report the 1959 crop appears better than usual with about half a bale per acre.

Prices quoted Thursday morning show grain rates for milling wheat 1.85 per bushel and corn 1.00 bu. Cattle at Clifton sale: over 570 head offered. steers and yearlings 26 to 27.75, cows 15 to 18.50, bulls 19 to 21.50, stocker steers 26 to 28.50, cows with calves 165 to 250, hog top 15, lamb top 18.
