Womack-Coyote won the City Softball League championship by defeating Clifton 9-4 at City Park on Tuesday. The victory secures an unbeaten league record and avoids a playoff for the 1966 summer title.
Clifton High School starts 1966 football with 54 players in two daily workouts led by Coach Aubrey Roberts. The schedule opens September 9 at Ferris, and ticket sales start August 29 with prices set for season packages and general admission.
Sunset Home administrator C Willard Stromwall said a plan to upgrade and possibly expand the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home was discussed after inspections by William M. Collier Jr and Dean Blue. Hill Burton grants may only fund new construction, prompting a master plan by an architect to fit future units, with upgrading identified as cost prohibitive. New air conditioning for Tyssen Hall, funded in part by Myrtle Dahl Estate, is under way by Bill Lammer of McGregor, and the stairwell is being enclosed for fire safety.
Clifton veterans from Robert E. Binford Post 8553 attended the VFW District 14 organizational meeting in Waco at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon August 14. The group planned the district program for the coming year with Dan Amundson presiding. Clifton attendees included Doyle Hulme Ibrey Linberg Selmer Amundson and Alvin Amundson.
Clifton official gauge shows 3.12 inches of rain to date for August with 1.20 inches on August 11, 0.30 on August 12, 1.10 on August 13, 0.20 on August 14, and 0.82 on August 15. Nearby areas report varying rainfall amounts during the period.
Albert S Eckert 70 died August 14 at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home after eight years of ill health and strokes. He served in World War I and married Marie Ott in 1922, had two daughters, and farmed near Clifton before later working at local gins. The Eckerts moved to Clifton in 1952 and later to Fort Worth.
Superintendent Kent Appleby announced the first day of classes for the 1966 67 Clifton Public Schools will be Thursday September 1 with 8 20 a m instruction. Bus service lunch prices 25c 30c, enrollment about 750, and facilities expanded with new classrooms and moved Dunbar building for dressing rooms. Faculty lists for elementary junior high and high school cover multiple teachers and staff roles.
Mrs. W H Pierce 39 of Clifton died August 11 at Providence Hospital Waco after a six day stay in the facility She would have turned 40 on August 15 born Mullin Mills County August 15 1926 she lived near Clifton San Saba Center City and Clifton before moving to Clifton a year ago Surviving are husband W H Pierce father Berry Kelly three sons a daughter six brothers and four sisters Funeral services were held August 13 at Clifton Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev G W Milner Interment was in Clifton Cemetery Sympathies are extended to the family.
The Clifton Gun Club will hold its third summer skeet shoot at 1:00 pm on Sunday August 21 on the Jack R Hill place FM 219 east of Clifton. Ed Ray of Gatesville and other top Central Texas shooters are expected. A fish fry will follow at 7:00 pm. The club has about 45 members and is Remington standardized.
Patrolmen James A. Wright and Harvey D. Lane report 15 rural traffic crashes in Bosque County during July 1966. No deaths, ten injuries, and property damage totaling 6922 dollars. For the first seven months of 1966 the county logged 28 rural crashes with 41 injuries and 58869 dollars in damage.
Mrs. C. G. Walker and other relatives accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Ted B. Evans visited Houston from Thursday of last week until Sunday with her sister-in-law.
Clifton Volunteer Fire Department answered four grass fire alarms since the last Record issue. A pasture fire near Larry Langston place southwest of Clifton was fought around 5:00 p.m. last Wednesday. A lightning sparked pasture at K Bar Ranch in Fairview near Clifton Sunday about 4:00 p.m. was extinguished before arrival. Early Sunday around 2:00 p.m. firefighters fought a grass fire on the island point entering Lake Whitney near Murt's Lodge.
Clifton Chief of Police Eldon J. Forbess reports no traffic citations for the week of August 1 to August 13. One arrest for Driving While Intoxicated resulted in a $306 total payment including a $250 fine, $32.50 court costs, and a ten day jail term pro bated for one year. If caught during probation, the subject faces return to jail and a one year license suspension.
Orlette Watson of Watson's Feed and Hatchery in Clifton sold his Purina products franchise to Vernon Erickson of Erickson Feed Mill here this week. Watson will continue selling television radio and phonograph services.
Bettye Viertel of Crawfills Gap wins one of four top honors at District 8 4-H Dress Review held at Tarleton State College in Stephenville. Junior blue ribbons go to Susan Jones of Mosheim with 11 others. state finals set for October 15 at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.
