In Galveston Island the Flagship Hotel rises on a concrete pier once part of Pleasure Pier. The hotel, built in the 1960s, sits over the ocean with dining room and bedroom windows offering ocean views below. A rule bans fishing from the windows to avoid hooks from surfers.
The storm brought light rain dust and wind gusts to Clifton area with no reported damage locally. Cedar Shores resident Pat Crow says wind blew a porch from the Bradshaw home into the Jentz yard and knocked out windows at another residence near Lake Whitney.
After two weeks Basque area youths sold subscriptions for The Clifton Record and seven earned bikes. Donald Carpenter and Sharon Culp were early bike winners, followed by Beth Conrad, Mary Jo Ray, Larry Don Townley, and Debbie Dreyer. Of 36 participants, 27 are boys and 9 are girls, with girls holding the higher production average. Entries run until August 22 noon with all funds due. prices rise September 1 for county and out of area subscribers.
Department of HEW awards $789,973 Hill-Burton grant for construction of a 64 bed general hospital in Clifton. Total project cost $1,759,946. Recipients include Goodall-Witcher Hospital. Information released by Congressman Poage’s office and Senator Tower.
The Our Savior's Lutheran Church Women of Norse Texas celebrate the 74th anniversary with a 4 p.m. Sunday program in the parish hall. A pageant titled Down Through the Years will be presented for attendees from the area and state.
Clifton hosts the 39th Central Texas Fair and 19th Rodeo from August 27 to 29 with livestock and homemaking exhibits from eight counties. Highlights include a Lions Club parade, a sausage supper, turkey dinner, Owens Belgian Horses, an Agri movie unit, a domino and 42 tourney for seniors, a barn yard exhibit, a pet show, and a Dress Revue at City Hall.deadlines for live stock and H E exhibits are August 19 and 24, entries from Bosque Hill Johnson Somervell Erath Hamilton Coryell and McLennan counties.
CHS Band rehearsals for the 1970-71 school year start Monday August 10 from 8 to 10 a.m. for grades 8 through 12. Band director Mel Cowan urges instrument checks for school owned horns and rent money due. Cal l band hall at 675-6494 or home 675-8228 to help prepare the band hall for rehearsals.
Clifton and Stephenville units led the Texas National Guard with the highest Brigade score during ATT training maneuvers at Fort Hood. Company A earned the top First Battalion score, as the battalion led all three battalions in the 71st Brigade. A Clifton Record staffer recalls day by day drills under simulated battle conditions with heavy enemy fire and airborne assignments at the marshalling area.
Clifton Cardinals dropped a 3-1 decision to Snyder in the Texas Teen-Age League State Playoffs at Sweetwater. Pitcher Donald Cannuteson is expected to start Wednesday as Clifton fights to stay alive in the double-elimination tourney after earlier state-qualifying wins.
The West Shore Volunteer Fire Department at Lake Whitney hosts a fish fry Saturday September 5 at the new Shore Acres Drive station west of Laguna Park. Admission is a free will donation to raise funds for equipment for the new department.
Clifton's newly formed Chamber reaches 88 members as ten more join. President Husen Aars announced the gain and Executive Vice President Neil Gately urged members to submit committee preferences and ideas for local work. New members include A B C Grocery Ray Byford Youth Beauty Salon Central Freight Lines Lone Star Gas Cen-Tex Electric Ray's Automotive Dr. T C Eggen Opt r Beauty Shop Clifton Locker Plant.
