Doak Walker Retires from Pro Football After Lions Career
Doak Walker announced on July 29 1955 that he would play one more season with the Detroit Lions then retire. The Texan star led SMU to back-to-back Southwest Conference titles and earned Heisman laurels as a underclassman. He carved a legend in Detroit alongside Bobby Layne and Yale Lary, culminating in a Cotton Bowl farewell and a Doak Walker Day tribute before a large crowd in Dallas.
