Dallas. Rev. Robert Cook Buckner evangelist author and founder of Buckner's Orphan's Home died today aged 86. He was born in Madisonville Tennessee and ordained a Baptist minister in Kentucky in 1850. He has been active in Texas Baptist affairs since 1859.

New York April 7 three Brooklyn youths Michael McTigert 25 Joseph Madigan 22 and Thomas Callow 23 appeared in county court to honor a pledge to face grand larceny charges for sailing to France after answering the war call. The missing James McVeigh 20 was killed in action. The four enlisted in the 106th infantry. After pleading guilty the three survivors were dismissed. the case was postponed until after the war for the fourth.

Austin April 4 Governor Hobby vetoed senate bill 178 which would create the State Banking department and set the Commissioners salary at 6000 per year. The veto preserves the existing Department of Insurance and Banking and blocks separation. The proclamation says the measure would merely create a new office and fails to clearly define each division’s functions.

Laredo Texas April 7 a conference between Governor Hobby and Mexican border state governors focused on easing passport requirements and improving trade regulations. The cordial talks included military officials and were held on the international bridge. a second session occurred at Nuevo Laredo’s customs house.
A fire starting in the new coliseum adjoining the Cotton Palace at noon spread to the war exhibit building and then to the main Cotton Palace edifice. Firefighters fought the blaze, with losses expected around 250000 dollars. The property was partly insured and the main building was nearly saved by 2 30 PM.
