Age of Inquiry Opens with Progressive Vision

Hon Victor Murdock spoke at the Clearfield chautauqua on The Trend of the Times urging government by the people and reform. He warned against monopolies and called for inquiry, contrasting abundance with poverty as he quoted sensational newspaper scenes. Continued on Eighth Page.

Sediment in the Water We Drink

An exhibition at the Progress office shows a cloth and a bottle stained with dark brown sediment from tap water. Officials say the sediment is not harmful but cannot identify its cause, despite pipes being inspected. A chemical analysis might solve the mystery.

Fatal Auto Accident Near Tioga County Kills Three

A crash near Blossburg Tioga county killed Mechzen and James Cooney with Joseph Cooney injured. William Dunsmore superintendent of Rus Sel Coal company and Mrs Dunsmore survived with minor injuries. James Cooney died at Blossburg hospital. Joseph Cooney spine injury. Miss Margaret Mechzen taught in Clearfield last year.

Beautiful Dahlias in Rishells West Side Garden

William B. Rishell claims the finest dahlia collection in Clearfield with 200 to 300 plants at 210 Merrill Street. He highlights a rare four twin dahlia on one stalk and says it is the prettiest flower he has seen. The blooms will be shown at Dufton's hardware store this week.

Hospital Patient Harry Healey Faces Gall Stone Operation

In the Monarch billiard parlor proprietor Harry Healey is in Clearfield Hospital for gall stone surgery. He will undergo an operation for the condition.

Presbyterian Day at Lakemont Park

On Thursday July 16 the Presbyterians of this section plan a picnic at Lakemont Park near Altoona. Speakers include Rev. F Dean Miller and Rev James D Moffatt with Dr W B McCullough outlining Lincoln. A chorus of soloists and an orchestra will entertain. athletic events run 3 15 to 5 with dinner and supper by the South Altoona church and excursion rates on the Pennsylvania railroad.

Strikers Fired On By Westinghouse Guards Near Pittsburgh

Westinghouse strikers on Oaks Hill east of Pittsburgh were fired upon by state guards as troopers moved in. The clash ended with several strikers arrested and more strike breakers arriving from Philadelphia and Detroit. Company reports say hundreds returned to work, but this is disputed. The strike is expected to end within 45 hours.

Freeport Woman May Be Freed After Exam

Mrs Carman, jailed yesterday on a murder charge in the office of Dr Cadman, husband of the defendant, could be released after Monday's examination. Assistant District Attorney Weeks said the state's case may collapse and that the strongest evidence has already been presented, suggesting they may not proceed to the grand jury.

Ambrose Toot, known for several escapades in Clearfield, pleaded guilty to breaking into a building and larceny. He was sent to the state institution for feeble minded at Polk in Venango County after Judge Bell appointed a committee that found him unbalanced. The judge ordered his removal to Polk. Silk Mill Expansion Boosts Clearfield Jobs Amid Chautauqua Event

Seventy five workers are employed at the Clearfield silk mill with plans to add more as training continues. The mill expands with new looms and finished plush production moving from Norwich to local facilities. Popular DuBois Citizen E F Vosburg Dies at 54

E Fred Vosburg a DuBois druggist and popular resident died Wednesday morning in DuBois of peritonitis at age 54 born in Driftwood. He opened a drug store in 1879, retired in 1894 to work in insurance, and is survived by his widow a son and a daughter.

Down and others injured in city automobile crash

A car crash near Dead Curve on the Plainfield road left Frank Wa unconscious and several others, including Elms Rafferty, severely bruised. J Down was broken and arrested for vicious conduct as Eliza Pennington was jailed. Weather notes predict generally fair, slightly cooler north portions tonight and Friday.

Double murderer Joe Hillstrom opts for shooting over hanging

Salt Lake City July 3 Joseph Hillstrom known as Joe Hill, poet and composer, a prominent labor leader, awaits execution for the murders of John Morrison and Jane Morrison. Hillstrom elected shooting as his method, as required by state law, with the execution scheduled for September 4.
