A Dover report says a steamship, possibly German supply vessel, was attacked by two British torpedo boats after ignoring stop signals and was brought to New Haven with oil cargo aboard. Russian warships bombard Turkish seaports 160 miles east of Constantinople, sinking 11 Turkish vessels at Fregli.
Former Rep. Mitchell of Pennsylvania, an original Wilson ally and Democratic leader, moves to the Court of Claims after defeat in the U S Senate race. President Wilson appoints Palmer to succeed Justice Owry, who resigns today. Palmer, Democratic caucus chairman, had refused the secretary of war post. Home at Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
G K Ainsworth of Pitsburg representing Fox Film Corp arranged a program of latest New York successes at the Clearfield opera house. Featured stars include William Farnum Wilton Ye Catherine Countess Stewart Rolmes Betty Nansen and Thedas Bre. The program will include the controversial film Nigger drawing attention from theatre owners. Nise Elia Ward of Moschannon is visiting her sister Mrs Frank Mosebane.
A large audience greeted Prangelist Schultz at the Baptist Church last night. Schultz used the text Where Art Thou to pose God’s question to four classes. AML members and others were urged to attend upcoming meetings as matters demand urgent attention. Boston saw John J. Mitchell Radars installed as U S marshal succeeding C Guy Mourchir.
Chicago April 1 Civic clubs nationwide fight the billboard menace in an antitrust suit set for trial before federal Judge K M Landis. United States Attorney Charles F Clyne seeks to revive the American Bill Posters Association, claiming it controls about 40 000 alleged eye sores from Gotham to Frisco. He says opponents are battling a big trust and hopes to stop billboard space from the fountain to the head. Witnesses for defendants include billboard officials from across the country and photographs from nearly 1 000 cities.
Five men died this morning in an explosion at the Equitable Powder Co. plant five miles from Albion Illinois. Ey United Press reports from Albion confirm the fatal blast at the dynamite factory. A second item from New York notes the 100th birthday of Prince Otto von Bismarck celebrated by German clubs in New York and New Jersey with a program of music, speeches, and motion pictures.
Austrian aviators twice dropped bombs near the palace in Cetinje, Montenegro. Hydroplanes over the city caused no major damage but slightly injured four civilians.
James Purcell of Arnot becomes president succeeding Patrick Gilday of Morrisdale. Charles ONeil of Clearfield advances to vice president while Richard Gilbert remains secretary treasurer. Executives shift includes William Welsh and Stanley Hudzinski. Gilday to join national arbitration committee. district anticipates a strong administration.
Boston April 1 1917 the decennial census was launched with hundreds of centerstars interpreters and agents drilled for the July 1 enumeration of population and industries. The $400000 program will be overseen by Charles F Gellemy and promises confidentiality ending by June 30 1917.
Franklin New Hampshire April 1 United Press reports a Golden Rule Farm home for neglected children opened today. A 300 tract north of the city marks the site as the new facility prepares to welcome young residents.
Paris April 1 police investigations in the Raymond Rolfe Swoboda case reveal disclosures. Swoboda an American arrested in Paris for setting fire to the steamship La Touraine. In a villa search police found a photo of three German officers with Swoboda. A German actress, staying here, is believed to have led him to become a German spy.
Rev B A Salter and family depart today for Patton as he transfers by the Central Pennsylvania conference of the Methodist church. Parishioners express genuine regret over his several years at West Side M E church and his other duties. Farewell reception Tuesday evening drew many, with addresses by Revs H R Bender and BR C Peters and Rev C R Allenbach.

A blaze last night destroyed the house and barn of Mrs. Singery near Woodsnd AU. The furniture and entire contents valued around 5000 dollars were burned. The origin is unknown. The family was away visiting in Pittsburg, so nothing was saved.

Names of 600 men drawn as residents of the county to serve as grand jurors for the quarter sessions court starting May 2. A long list includes T W Bailey Irvona, Noah H Brown, Joseph French, Ed McCluskey, Truman Smith, and many others. Traverse jurors for the first week are listed, with numerous farmers and carpenters from Clearfield, DuBois, Lawrence, and surrounding townships. Anomalous entries note clerks and supervisors among the roster.
