Elkader Builds Stone Arch Bridge After Long Effort
Elkader completes a durable stone arch bridge over the Turkey River as plans finalized in 1889, after earlier wooden and iron proposals. Engineer Tschirgi warned of unsafe truss designs, leading to bids for a rock arch begun in 1888 and finished by August with two spans each forty one feet long and a total width of thirty feet.
