The Times announces a week long popularity and energy contest offering a 17 jewel gold watch as top prize. Nominate a entrant with a coupon. votes accrue from new and renewed subscriptions and back payments. Contest closes December 30 with weekly vote tallies published. prizes for second and third place awarded.
W. D. Sutton of Pine Mountain Manufacturing leads Day Lumber and Coal Company in a multi site timber operation in Letcher County. A year long logging contract anchors the project with several hundred workers, and six miles of narrow gauge railroad are being built to haul timber. The effort marks one of the region’s largest logging endeavors to date.
A Christian church in Clay County reports a highly successful protracted meeting led by Rev. D. H. Mutherly with Bro. Winkler assisting. Many new members joined and baptism occurred at the river last Thursday and Sunday. more confirmations are expected before Thursday’s close. Names added include Roxie Akers, Lillie Adams, Claude Bowman, Cora Flinchum, Henry Fraxjer, Carrie Gonsey, Maude Hammons, Fann Hatten, Edward Hatten, Hatten Alice, Jolansonie, Larsson Sylvester, Anna McClure, M. B. Martin, Lizzi Puttick, Bettie Potts, Walter Phillips, Nannie Potts, Marcus Rucker, Eliza Risto, Pearl Smethers, Minnie Stokely, Cai parks, Thomas Dock Tipton, J Ling Wright, Mrs. James Wiswins, Mrs. Reese, Fannie Wright.
Reports show cattle disease rising with new outbreaks, jeopardizing trade. Losses approach a half million dollars as the Federal Government prepares a large immediate appropriation to control the epidemic.
Stan ton correspondent reports Rev P O Derthick away at the annual convention of the American Sunday School Union in Paulaski Virginia. Regular correspondence is omitted this week.
Services at Powell's Valley church will be held on the first Sunday in December with both morning and evening preaching by Eld. J. J. Wills of Beattyville, the pastor.
Friends of A F Hillenmeyer of Lexington report he has been bedbound with a badly swollen knee but is improving and hopes to be active soon. A leading central States fruit tree grower, he built a long, trusted 50 year business with his sons, relying on newspaper publicity and fair dealing to draw trade. He plans to write on fruit culture for The Times and is regarded as a Kentucky authority.
Mr. J. A. Tuttle, once a local resident, had been living in Winchester for several years when he died suddenly at his home on Monday morning.
The Clay City Time shifts from seven to five columns per issue, shortening the paper to fit an abbreviated form. Editor Mr M. St Mara embraces the change and predicts continued growth for the restless, newsful local weekly.
Mr Tuttle died of heart failure and was in good health prior to the sudden death. A longtime subscriber to The Times since leaving the area, he was well known to Clay City and Powell county residents and his loss caused distress among friends and neighbors.
Daniel Moreland owner of one mill on Noland's Creek in Estill county was killed Sunday when his clothing was caught in a launch engine during a trip up the stream. He was drawn into the machinery and whirled around before companions could stop the engine. Moreland leaves a wife and one child. He was well known to many readers.
The programme of the Teachers Association of Educational Divisions Lind 2 and Vowellenanty Kentucky held at Clay City at 1 15 PM on the 1th day of December LM includes Welcome Address by Rev LaF Mann and Mrof B S Laws Supt Kate Bohannon, sessions on social duties of the teacher, reading, handling backward pupils, domestic science in rural schools, convincing parents school worth, humane education, general discussion, and Benediction by Me Bert Grows with speakers Winfred Davis Zella Lang Daisy Shearer Bexsie Curry etc.
