City Council adopted a resolution to pursue feeder airline service with CAB, pledging airport improvements within 180 days and waiving airport use charges for five years for airlines serving the city. Ted Poteet to represent the city.
Committees for the Page County Conservation Club meet in Shenandoah Thursday night to activate the county sportsmen work units. Ed Falk, county president, announces committees including Membership Robert Hall Art Greenwood program Ellis McNew Lowell Shuler John Greenwood public ity Jack Henshaw George Woolson Projects Norris Gates Art Kelley legal William Hemphill junior organization John Sperry. The meeting is at 6 pm at the Shenandoah Airport focusing on the membership group. Those from Clarinda meet at Art Greenwood's home at 7 pm to conserve transportation facilities.
On Labor Day at a farm near College Springs Roy Tompkins severely injured his right forearm when an ensilage chopper pulled it through the rollers. He worked with Jim Tompkins and Bob Christen. The machine was stopped quickly and Roy remained conscious, with the arm still inside the rollers.
Col Robert Stafford described SAC at Offutt Air Force Base as a world peace force with a mission to blunt atomic offenses and respond to theater commands. He outlined three air forces with jet bombers and refueling aircraft, noting the B 52 replacement for the B 36 and strong global reach.
The Des Moines Register reports the state auditor will audit College Springs books after a petition filed by Mayor Lucille E Simpson and local taxpayers. The petition gave no stated reason for the audit and no date is provided.
Page Eilleemmere the 45th jointly owned by Jake Stimson and Art Johnston defended its grand championship of the Nebraska State Pair Open Angus show in Lincoln. The two-year-old bull drew praise for its flashy head, with plans announced to show in Kansas Kentucky Missouri and Denver this season. It previously was reserve grand champion at the All Iowa Fair in Cedar Rapids last year.
James Van Fosson, 70, was killed when a dynamite load meant to remove a tree stump detonated. The accident occurred about 5 pm Tuesday a mile and a half east of Elmo as he and Darrell Carpenter worked on the road. Funeral planned Friday at 2 pm at the Christian Church in Elmo.
Clarinda Junior College will receive a shipment of snakes Monday for study. Loaned by the state conservation department for the school year, the reptiles include timber and pygmy rattlers and copperheads, all Iowa captures. They will be returned to the department for its mobile exhibit after the school year ends.
Funeral services for James S S Pittam 53 were planned at Foster Harmon Williams Mortuary with Dr C B Hawthorne and Rev Mrs T Fessler officiating. Interment in Clarinda Cemetery followed a death from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at Clarinda Municipal Hospital after a farm home transfer. Survived by wife Fae Pittam two daughters Addie Mae Smith Linden and Virginia Lea Gourley Ames and sister Pauline Taggart Garden Grove.
Eight Clarinda Boy Scouts will be inducted into the Order of Arrow this weekend at Camp Wakonda near Griswold. From 23 campers in Clarinda this summer, eight earned the honor. The OA session starts at 1 pm Saturday and continues until 3 pm Sunday under leader supervision.
Police chief announced that only 6 percent of the 210 people involved in 105 Clarinda traffic accidents from Aug 1 1955 to July 31 1956 were under 18. Of the 12 youths involved, five were Clarinda residents.
Jim Borthwick a senior from College Springs won the regional FFA public speaking contest representing the central region of 13 states at St Louis Missouri. He advances to nationals with a $150 prize and a place on the program October 15 18 in Kansas City.
A list of minor penalties shows Justice Court in Kermit issuing fines to defendants on Sept 2 and Sept 4. Names include David Maltsberger and Ralph Case with offenses such as intoxication and speed. Other cases involve Highway Patrol and commissions citing overlength trucks and related fines.
Mrs Delbert Davison president of the Licensed Practical Nurse Association of Iowa and three other Clarinda women attended the first state LVN board meeting of the year at the Hotel Savery in Des Moines August 31. Delegates to the national convention in Hartford September 16 to 28 were appointed and plans for accredited advanced educational courses were discussed. A luncheon was served. Attending with Mrs Davison were Jertrude Lunt state recording secretary Mrs Carrie Martindale state corresponding secretary and Mrs Mason Williams vice president of the Clarinda LPN unit.
Russell Shepard, 24, was found dead in an upstairs room with a rifle at his side. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Louis Shepard, with a brother bound for military service on Sept 17 and a sister in Omaha. Funeral services are set for Saturday at Sutphen Funeral Home in Villisea, with burial in Villisea Cemetery.
In a signed order Judge Bennett Cullison denied Harry Fithen's motion for a new trial in the case brought by Delbert L Slater, who won $5,917 in district court for alleged wrongful arrest and beating in Shenandoah in Oct 1954. Also, James B Watkins pled guilty to illegal transportation of liquor and faced $500 fine, with 24 pints seized on Highway 71. A separate filing by Verla M Moore was dismissed on Myrtle Kelly.
A Clarinda motorist barely avoided a collision after spotting a tree limb across Tarkio Street between 17th and 18th Streets. The sun and shadows impaired vision as the driver slowed and observed the object before taking evasive action.
Garfield PTA announces an open house at Garfield School in Clarinda on Sunday from 4 to 6 pm to showcase the newest addition to the city school system. Light refreshments will be served. Patronize local merchants.
Clarinda schools report 1956 enrollment at 1,409 Thursday up from 1,288 last fall and near records. Clarinda Junior College has 147 full-time students, nine short of last year’s 156, with nursing and late enrollments possible to push the total higher. High and elementary enrollments show broader gains across Garfield Lincoln and McKinley schools, with total elementary enrollment at 627, up 31 from last year.
