Weather Bureau observer Wayne Fuller reports August precipitation at 10.68 inches, making it the wettest month of the year to date. The year-to-date rainfall through September 1 stands at 32.63 inches, surpassing the normal 31.7 inches, with an unusually cool August and only five days above 90.
George Annan of Clarinda Page County has been named outstanding commissioner of southwest Iowa by soil conservation district commissioners from 111 counties. He has served seven years in Page County and farms near Yorktown. the Annsn family is active in the community and will attend the 14th annual conference in Davenport September 18 to 20 where he will receive a reward and compete for outstanding Iowa commissioner.
Students lead the prep for the Cardinal Canteen reopening set for September 6 or 10. Carpenters install two wall cupboards for dishes and food supplies while two game rooms receive repainting. Glenn Hipsley, canteen manager, notes duties and a possible opening next Tuesday if paint dries.
Two Clarinda volunteer firefighters climbed a 100 foot water tower in a downpour Sunday evening to rescue a young male patient at the Clarinda Mental Health Institute. Fire Chief Abel Greenway Jr. said the station was alerted around 7 45 pm by state hospital authorities after the patient had climbed the tower on the MHS grounds and could not descend. Firemen Dick Bramble and Don Maxwell completed the hazardous ascent to assist.
Clarinda Chamber of Commerce members elected five directors to take office Jan 1 among 10 candidates in a primary by mail. New members welcomed included Lloyd Otte and Dr John Topping, with committee reports offered in lighthearted convention style.
Three members of the Clarinda Community School District Board of Education seek re election in the September 12 election per district secretary Mrs Joe Updike. Terms expiring are R R Oehler and Julius Isaacson. longer terms held by Charles Sinn James Stephens and Wilbert Wagoner. Hans Morgan seeks re election as treasurer, elected previously at a special district re organization election. No other candidates reported. filing ends Friday noon. County election is not held this year per Page County Supt Esther Hensleigh.
Forty miles of Interstate 80 from Dexter to Atlantic will officially open to traffic on Labor Day.
Clarinda Building Corp will hold its annual stockholders meeting in the rear dining room of the Linderman Hotel Tuesday at 7 30 pm announced by President Kent Thornell. The firm formed after World War II to attract industry to Clarinda has built three buildings, two occupied by James R Kearney Corp and Esco of Iowa, the third leased by Poole Brothers Inc Chicago. Directors include Darrel Davison and Paul Opitz with R J Swanson as vice president and L E Finley as secretary treasurer.
Texas Jim Haney of Perryton has purchased the Hopkins Missouri Journal from Russell Cross who will join the Baldwin Ledger in Kansas. Cross departs Thursday for a new Kansas post. Haney moves to Hopkins later this month. Marvin Fine will run the paper in the interim while pursuing schooling at Northwest Missouri State College.
Preliminary 1960 Census figures place Clarinda with a 3.8 percent decline from 1950, listing 4895 residents not counting the state hospital. Bedford records the sharpest drop at 10.1 percent, while Red Oak falls 1.7 percent. neighboring towns and counties also show declines, with Taylor and Montgomery counties among the larger losses.
Bids from Clarinda agencies for Municipal Hospital insurance were opened at a special trustees meeting. Figures show low bids accepted for items including money and securities, blanket position bonds, workers compensation, hospital building coverage, and professional liability with Mace and Loranz & Co among bidders.
J Allen Sunderland of Los Angeles was fined 150.30 for an 8576 pound gross overload and 25 more for operating without the proper fee. Other justice court actions include Robert Lams 10 fine for overwidth, M M T Divine 10 for overwidth, Harlan Mace 5 for speeding and 1 for improper parking.
Three divorces were filed Monday by Judge Vernon Johnson in Sidney with custody or name restoration granted. Donna Barton and Anita N McElroy received divorces with child custody and maiden-name restoration. Lucille Woods obtained a divorce with child custody. Two petitions were dismissed, including a case against Merrill Snyder.
Retail committeemen Russ Jensen John Ingmand and Don Hutson challenge chamber members to raise 200 by Friday evening for new Christmas decorations. A wheelbarrow sign sits on a square corner as the stunt aims to entice donations.
County farmers will hear how planting corn varieties with different maturity rates affects harvest moisture. The program on September 7 at the Soil Conservation Experimental Farm between Clarinda and Shenandoah includes a day conditioning demonstration, lunch by the Harlan 4-H Club, and ISU agronomist E R Duncan's notes on moisture targets. Walter Woods will compare alfalfa and bromegrass pastures as 80 cattle graze trials with varying nitrogen fertilizer rates to measure herd gain.
Local scouts from Shenandoah Red Oak and nearby towns organize a district float down the Nishnabotna River starting Saturday afternoon September 17. Troops will launch north of Red Oak, camp near Coburg, and finish in Shenandoah Sunday morning. Bob McKensie of Red Oak, district camping director, announced the venture after a trial trip. Each troop supplies its own light boat or canoe. Plans are pending final details with scoutmasters.
Nodaway Lodge No 140 AF and AM will confer an entered apprentice degree at 7 30 pm Friday. No Lions meeting Monday due to Labor Day holiday. Clarinda Lions Club to resume with next regular meeting on September 19, per President Don Hutson.
EU Smith 76 died Thursday at Clarinda Municipal Hospital after a long illness. Funeral Monday at 2:30 pm at Williams-Foster Mortuary. Survived by brother Oscar Smith Caldwell Ida and sister Mrs Lo well Taylor Sioux City. daughter Mrs Margaret Yokum Clarinda. grandson Jack Leistner Independence Mo. great grandson Richard Kent Leistner. Born August 25 1884 in Correctionville area. Wife died 1959. brother John Smith died earlier this month. Home: 614 W State St. Happy was active in traveling men’s group and ran State Street Market until recent years.
Twelve Clarinda Kiwanis members joined delegates from Council Bluffs Hamburg Creston and Shenandoah for an inter-club meeting in Shenandoah on Monday August 22 About 100 attendees filled the hall with Clarinda providing about half the group The visiting delegation was the largest Clarinda led and Ralph G Allen served as club president. Carl Beason of Council Bluffs was elected Lt Governor for the coming year and will assume office at the North Platte district meeting September 11 13 succeeding Ernie Reis of Hamburg.
Page County will send its livestock and crop judging teams to the state fair on Saturday. The livestock contest starts at 7:30 am in the Livestock Pavilion with members Charles Morrow Ron Irvin Dorman Otte and Merle Mellencamp. The crop judging starts at 8 am in the 4 H Dining Hall with members Aula Newman Paul Mellencamp and David Med.
Opening day enrollment reached 1512 students for Clarinda Community Schools marking a 4.6 percent rise from last year. Supt William A Anderson notes expected growth as students return after the Iowa State Fair and vacations with additional classrooms easing pressure.
Toastmasters club members from Shenandoah Red Oak Atlantic and Creston will present a demonstrational meeting at the Linderman Hotel in Clarinda at 7 pm on Monday September 12. The event invites all interested local men to learn about Toastmasters activities and the aim of building public speaking skills.
