Deaths over the weekend in Page county include a Blanchard farmer who was initially thought drowned in a farm pond near Blanchard but died of a heart attack. Clarinda’s oldest woman resident was laid to rest Friday. services are to be held for the farmer’s widow at the Reformed Presbyterian church Wednesday.

Everett Carroll 37 died Sunday around 2 30 pm after collapsing in a pond near his Blanchard area farm while checking depth for his sons. He entered the water with son Jimmie 11 and neighbor Richard Graham, collapsed returning to shore. Fire department helped revive him. coroner ruled death a heart attack. He leaves a widow a daughter Loreta 9 and son Jimmie. Funeral plans pending.

Oldest Clarinda resident Mrs Mary Shum dies at 96
Mrs Mary Shum 96 longtime Clarinda resident died Friday evening from a cerebral hemorrhage at the home of her daughter Mrs Geneva Evans. Born in Page county she lived in the Clarinda area her entire life including 60 years on a farm north of Clarinda. Survivors include two daughters seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral service was held Monday at Foster Harmon Williams Mortuary with Rev Lester Greenwood officiating. Interment followed in Clarinda cemetery.

The Intrusion Prepait Co finished raising sunken walls at the Clarinda Public Library after three weeks. A one inch crack in the west wall was closed by lifting the northwest corner. all four sides required adjustment with 65 cubic yards of material removed to stabilize the foundation. Estimated cost runs about $5,000, later tallying to $23 per linear foot.

State Legion Commander to Speak at Kiwanis Meeting
Kiwanians will host Coletia Hamm state commander of the American Legion as the program speaker for the May 31 event. Ellis Bradley arranged Hamm to address a Memorial Day themed topic. The meeting moves to the Izaak Walton league building east of Shenandoah with the Shenandoah club joining. Hamm, a New York Life Insurance Co special agent based in Glenwood, was born near Clarinda January 16 1915. He led the Glenwood chamber of commerce three years and headed the Methodist Sunday school six years. He spent six years in soil conservation and served 19 months in the Philippine area during military service.
