New Market residents will vote Thursday on establishing a municipal waterworks. Polls open 8 am to 6 pm at the mayor's office. Town clerk N D Carpenter clarifies no frontage charge, explains a roughly 170 dollar assessment payable over 10 years, and outlines funding through earnings, bonds, and a small tax.
Max Johnson, Clarinda Junior College Social Science instructor, and Rotary Club members discussed how big a threat communism poses and whether World War III is likely. Johnson argued “loose talk is dangerous” and urged steps toward peace including arms reduction and a United Nations-like framework.
Forty-two farm reporters are called by the ASC to train on the 1956 corn allotment program at the City Hall basement Thursday at 9 a.m., with Albert J Rope supervising.

Taylor County Extension Service is compiling a list of farmers with hay for sale in Bedford. Farmers are asked to contact the Extension Service to list hay type, tonnage, baled or loose, and price. The compiled information will be available to buyers.
Janice Ellison of Pleasant Valley School in East River Township was omitted from the rural eighth grade honor roster in the Herald Journal. She had a 90.7 average, ranking among the honorees who will graduate at the Presbyterian Church on Wednesday at 2 pm.
Memorial services will be held at Hawleyville Cemetery on Sunday May 27 at 2 pm. Those bringing flowers to decorate soldiers’ graves are requested to bring them to the cemetery.
Workers at the Steel Tank Manufacturing plant remain off the job this Monday, as United Steelworkers Local 5377 led by Dutch Greimann reports no return since May 14. The union cites Farm-Rite Implement Co of Chicago as unwilling to bargain a contract with the newly organized union.
Felix Netzel aged 72 underwent amputation of his left arm at Red Oak on May 7 after an accident with a mechanical post hole digger.
All veterans and families are invited to a joint Memorial Day picnic after the parade on May 30. Amvets executives sponsor the event and provide Cokes for children. By last week 27 building permits were issued at City Hall per deputy city clerk Beulah Driftmier. Four permits went to new residences for Clyde Apple Mrs Wes Shum Richardson Lumber Co and Harold Miller. Home additions topped items with ten permits. planned garages porches and a machine shed were also approved. C V Lisle, president of Lisle Corp of Clarinda, is appointed to the Small Business Administration National Board of Field Advisors. The appointment, announced by SBA regional director C I Moyer, provides input on conditions affecting small firms nationwide. Lisle’s plant employs about 90 people and will join an area meeting in Omaha on May 23. The SBA Board operates without compensation and supports regional advisory actions. In Taylor County, the Board of Education met to plan a county unit reorganizing all district lines to align with county borders, with a majority favoring one Taylor County district and unanimous board approval. The plan, flexible to amend, will impact districts including Villisca, Bedford, Corning, and others. The county education board members are Hiram Thomas, president. Henning Hanson, vice-president. Kirk Nicholson, Thomas Larson, and Roy Buchanan.
US Agriculture Secretary Ezra T Benson cancels a planned tour of the experimental soil conservation farm near Norwich in southwest Iowa and southeast Nebraska drought area to advise President Eisenhower on the new farm bill. The trip is rescheduled for next week.
Four of 22 objectives submitted to a 13 member committee on higher education in Iowa were chosen for immediate action. Clarinda Junior College Dean James Browning, who attended the Des Moines meeting, said one priority is increased state aid to public junior colleges. Rep Vern Lisle leads a campaign to raise aid from 45 to 180 dollars per student. Dr T C Holy of UC urged expanding junior colleges to meet rising enrollments.
Page County growers can access crop insurance in 1957 as the ASC office confirms Page County on the new applicant list. Farmers with insurable corn land may participate, with landlords sharing in the crop and losses settled per insurance unit. Premiums are deductible and coverage rises in three seasonal stages.

Viva Vermule obtained a decree against Ivan G Vermule.
About twenty 32nd degree Scottish Rite Masons and their ladies dined at 6:30 at the Linderman Hotel. A program of music and talks followed, led by Mrs Harriett Davidson and a group of singers including Doris Forbes and Mary Brummett. Speeches by Lloyd K Perry and John J Montgomery preceded a main address by Peter W Janis, Des Moines attorney. The event, sponsored by Mr and Mrs A F Driftmier, drew guests from Shenandoah Des Moines Topeka and six consistories in cities like Topeka Grand Rapids Minneapolis Omaha Davenport and Des Moines.
