Clarinda High School held its annual honor assembly with Elizabeth Harlan presiding. Supt William A Anderson spoke as coaches and sponsors presented track football basketball and cheer awards to named students led by co captains Dan Evans Ken Hughes and others.

Absentee Ballots Now Available In Page County

County residents away on June 2 may vote absentee in the county auditor's office. Auditor Aletha Hutchings announced absentee voting began Monday and noted service personnel must apply themselves for primary ballots. Ballots sent to those ill or infirm and must be notarized and returned by mail before election day.

Junior Police Intersection Guards For Parade Thursday

Clarinda junior police will guard intersections as Des Moines goodwill visitors march from depot to the business district. The visitors will alight at the railroad and walk west of Main Street to the square. 125 Clarindans attend luncheon at St John’s Lutheran Church at 12 30.

Dr William Murray Tours Southwest Iowa City Notes

Dr William Murray of Ames Republican gubernatorial candidate visited Clarinda on a southwest Iowa tour. He met county officers at the courthouse and held a luncheon with local Republican leaders. The swing through Bedford Shenandoah Essex and Red Oak followed a prior Clarinda stop last year.

James B Graham arraigned over Thursday shooting spree

James B Graham 25 was bound over to the Grand Jury on a charge of assault with intent to inflict bodily injury after a shooting spree that wounded a 4 year old Clarinda boy. Police said he fired from an upstairs apartment near Dr W G Kuehn's offices and struck at least three targets before arrest.

Twenty Planes Spotted By Observers Here

Des Moines Filter Center reported twenty aircraft observed during a 12 hour sky watch at Clarinda Ground Observers Corps post on Sunday. Mrs Curtis Landis said the effort drew many visitors and thanked Welcome Wagon Newcomers Club for cooperation. Objections to School Mergers Deadlines Clarified

The Herald Journal corrects a May issue error stating that objections to school reorganizations must be filed by the noon of hearing day. County Superintendent Esther Hensleich notes objections may be filed until 12 noon on the day of the hearing with the county board of education handling the petition.

Braddyville teen awarded Harlan Scholarship

Roger Bales son of Mr and Mrs Clifford Bales of Braddyville has won a Harlan Scholarship from the Iowa Wesleyan College Scholarship Committee. A Braddyville High School graduate he studied pre medical work at Clarinda Junior College for two years and will major in biology with chemistry and languages as minors. He is set to graduate May 27 from Clarinda Junior College.

Former Amity Resident Lena Beals Price Dies in Loveland

Lena Beals Price 71, a former College Springs resident, died April 24 in Loveland, Colorado, per a niece’s letter. She was curator of Loveland's museum for many years, moved there from College Springs in 1906, with funeral services and interment held April 26 in Loveland.

Fire Threatening Desch Store in Clarinda District

Retail Sales Up in Clarinda in 1957 Fourth Quarter

Clarinda’s fourth quarter 1957 retail sales rose by 7396.40 from the 1956 period, with 197 returns totaling 2 253 308. The first quarter of 1958 receipts for Q4 1957 reached 45 066.16, while Q4 1956 collections totaled 56 147.79 from 209 permit holders as the 2 percent tax rate was restored July 1, 1957.

Army Pvt Sell arraigned on larceny charge in Tarkio

Army Private James Sell, 17, stationed at Ft Leonard Wood Missouri, was arraigned Thursday afternoon before Justice R J McCurdy on a larceny charge. He was arrested at Tarkio May and turned over to Sheriff Stanley Edear. Accused of stealing about 45 hogs and other farm goods across Pave County, he waived preliminary exam and was bound over to District Court. He remains jailed on a 1000 bond.
