The City Council awarded the resurfacing of 531% blocks of Clarinda’s deteriorating concrete streets to Carson Construction Co of Des Moines, low bidder at 94124.30, below the estimated 122700. Other bids came from EFC Henningsen Co and Lamb Construction Co. A second seaboating contract bid was opened but not awarded, with Gee Construction Co the low bidder at 18972.88. The council delayed final decision pending extra details on Flint chat transport from Elmo, Missouri.

Esco of Iowa and the Clarinda Industrial Board sponsored a luncheon and open house in Clarinda for representatives of Iowa electrical utilities. Attendees included officials from Iowa Power and Light, Des Moines Electric Light and Power, Cedar Rapids Utilities, Iowa Southern Utility, Centerville, and Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric. Ed Storey of the Iowa Development Commission, and staffers Bob Cannon and Marty Miller attended. Hosts were Esco President James Holtzinger, Plant Manager Don Hoopes, and assistant Delbert Simmons. C V Lisle led ceremonies, with Kent Thornell welcoming guests. Speakers included Holtzinger, Hans Morgan of Clarinda, and the commission director. After a plant tour, guests enjoyed fruit drinks served by Mrs Holtzinger and Mrs Hoopes, reinforcing Esco's slogan helping build a healthier Iowa.

The Citizens Education Study Committee of 60 known as Sixty Clarindans will meet Monday at 8 pm in the Clarinda High School auditorium to outline a 10 year educational program. Supt William A Anderson says the cross section includes present and future school board members, faculty and citizens to form four subcommittees in Finance Special Services Curriculum Housing to support the enlarged district. The first meeting will include orientation and discussion as the committees organize under Dr Anderson’s guidance.
