Grand Opening of Clarinda Bowl May 12 14

The brand new nine lane Clarinda Bowl opens with a May 12 to 14 grand opening. Festivities start Saturday at 10 am with public bowling, exhibitions by world champion Andy Anderson and teams from Clarinda and nearby towns. Exhibitions, prizes, and special events run through Monday closing at 11 pm.

Clarinda Bowl attracts 35 Lions clubs for May 27 tourney

Invitations extended to 35 southwest Iowa Lions clubs for a district bowling tournament at the new Clarinda Bowl. The event, on Sunday May 27, is the first at the new alleys which are ABC sanctioned and feature nine lanes, a snack bar, public address system, air conditioning, and 48 spectator seats. Bob Isom owns the venue and will provide trophies and cash prizes. Clancy Hunt chairs the local committee and aims to attract business patrons for a noon-hour lunch and informal play.

Change in Clarinda Police Department Names and Appointments

Dennis Wilson resigns as Clarinda police officer to take an occupational therapy post at the Clarinda Mental Health Institute where he hopes to organize a dance orchestra for patients. Harry Airshie is sworn in as police officer on night duty after moving from Bedford. he has a Clarinda resident for three years, works for Shum Plumbing and Heating, and is married with one daughter and two grandchildren.

Local Firms Used in Work on Alleys at New Clarinda Bowl

Local Clarinda firms led the remodel and equipment install for the new Clarinda Bowl. Five local artisans handled electrical plumbing air conditioning and painting and sign work. Materials were bought from Richardson and Green Bay Lumber and Farmers Union Shipping.

Bowling course touted as Iowa first at Clarinda Bowl

Clarinda Bowl will offer what appears to be Iowa’s first bowling instruction course. Proprietor Bob Isom notes summer classes in fundamentals for beginners and refreshers, with Jen Norris aiding. About three sessions weekly for a nominal fee. exact dates to be announced.

Isom to Attend ISBA Meeting and Brunswick School

Isom becomes a member of the Iowa State Bowling Association and will attend the annual Des Moines convention May 16 17. In his absence Andy Anderson and Francis Fahey will operate the new alleys. He will also go to Chicago in August for a nine day Brunswick school for bowling alley proprietors.

Nelson elected Sigma Chi recording secretary at SUI

William Nelson of Clarinda has been elected recording secretary of the State University of Iowa chapter of Sigma Chi. He is a sophomore at Iowa City campus, son of Mr and Mrs Ed Nelson.

New Clarinda Bowl Hires Four Staff Members

Proprietor Bob Isom will be on site as owner-manager at Clarinda Bowl. Francis Fahey will assist as assistant manager and organize leagues while working evenings. Odas Lilly is head maintenance, handling daily cleaning and equipment setup. Mrs Norman Carlson will run the snack bar with help from Mrs Bob Scroggs. A pinsetter crew completes the staff.

Former World Champ to Exhibit in Clarinda Bowling

Former world singles bowling champion Andy Anderson of Moline Illinois will appear in Clarinda for exhibition bowling and to help beginners. Anderson supervised the installation of the alleys and will perform two weeks after the Clarinda Bowl event.

Prospects Bright for League Play at Clarinda Bowl

Prospects look strong for a busy season at the new Clarinda Bowl starting next fall. About 60 businesses have signed as potential sponsors for men’s teams in the 1956 1957 league, with more requests coming in. The Post Office plans two teams, women show strong interest, and many teams come from surrounding communities. Clarinda Junior College will offer bowling as a physical training credit, and a junior league on Saturdays is planned along with possible midget league for younger students.

Bill Mack Displays Polished Rocks at Des Moines Center

Bill Mack was asked to leave a display of agates and polished rocks during a Des Moines weekend visit. His collection was added to the Des Moines Arts Center gem club exhibit and the Macks were invited to return for a club meeting where his sphere-polishing machine might be shown.

Mail Schedule Changes Announced by Postmaster Bench

Postmaster Bill Bench announced updated mail times to the north and west. The outbound mail to Villisca now leaves at 10 45 p m instead of 11 50 a m and the return mail now arrives at 1 p m instead of 2 p m.

Disaster Area Birthday Plans In Villisca

The Villisca Chamber of Commerce special events committee plans a June 11 observance for Tom Cooney turning 100. A meeting May 8 at Griswold Hall will choose a theme with dances, parade, refreshments, games, and speakers. County officials and rural groups discuss declaring a disaster area for federal aid.

Red Rosey Bush at CJC A home spun folk play

Cla rinda Junior College staged Red Rosey Bush a three act tale set in rural Iowa in the 1880s. Nancy Stillians wrote and directed the show featuring singing dancing and romance with Darwin Damewood providing ballad guitar interludes. Performances ran Thursday and Friday after a Wednesday dress rehearsal for Mental Health Institute patients.

Os car Engstrom announces county ASC elections and July 28 convention in Clarinda. Township ballots via mail go to all eligible voters from July 5 to 13 with return envelopes. County boards appoint community boards and nominate at least 10 candidates for community committeemen.

Clarinda Junior College Dean James Browning and E T Peterson of the University of Iowa were named to a state committee by Gov Leo Hoegh to map a higher education study. David B Cassat was named chairman. the panel includes state and private colleges and Browning represents public junior colleges. The task is planning for rising enrollment across Iowa colleges and avoiding needless divisiveness.
