East Page county reaches 80 percent of its $8,390 Red Cross quota as final day totals show about eight thousand dollars in gifts from Clarinda firms and residents. Nordland urges remaining canvassers to finish contacts and submit donations promptly.
A layman group led by Dr H S Frenkel of Clarinda seeks to boost Boy Scouts in Three Fires district amid low participation. They will form close committees across Cla rinda and surrounding towns, host monthly roundtables, and appoint chairmen by April 25 with meetings set in Clarinda for lunch and planning sessions.
The AE and KH PE O chapters announce a combined event for CHS annual banquet. After the banquet, prom dance, and midnight theater show, a 2:00 to 5:00 a.m. breakfast at the canteen will be served by PEO ladies. A $5 door prize will be awarded at breakfast’s close.
Two day spring rabbit show to be held May 7 and 8 at the 4 H barn in Clarinda with top judge William Chance of St Joseph joining judges for nine breeds. Event features division cups, cash and ribbon prizes, and volunteers handling catalog distribution across three states. Mrs Dora Guthrie of Clarinda reports the death of her sister in law Mrs Claude Johnston in San Diego California. Funeral and burial were in San Diego. Johnston was a Clarinda plumber for years and moved with his wife to San Diego last fall. Maiden name Flo Lowery born near Conway. The couple earlier lived on a farm near New Market. Survivors include husband a daughter Mrs Frances Uhr of Aruba and a son Victor of San Diego.
J S Wells 94 died March 29 in Clarinda Municipal Hospital after a short illness. Survived by sons Elvin Ivan Ray and daughters Frank Holland Gladys and Basil Scott. Wife Jennie Cavender Wells died in 1947. Member of Odd Fellows. Funeral Thursday at Baptist church New Market with Rev Cowles and Rev Matthews. Burial in Memory cemetery.
Clarin da Lions club will hold a regular meeting at the Linderman Hotel Monday evening led by President James Browning. The event is billed as Fun Night with members urged to come prepared for anything and an extremely valuable prize promised alongside other awards.

The Iowa National Guard, with 99 units in 78 communities, is described as a rapid mobilization reserve to defend the nation.
In Clarinda district court Allie Pullen Jr faces a third offense OMVI charge after a jury trial begun Wednesday. Judge R Kent Martin presides as testimony proceeds. Pullen was arrested June 3 1954 in Shenandoah while driving a coal truck and is free on $1000 bond. Roy Lee Myers pled guilty to an OMVI charge in Shenandoah before Judge Harold E Davidson and was fined $300 plus costs. Myers is in county jail for nonpayment of the fine. File Three Petitions were filed in his case.
Six of twenty property owners attended the public hearing on curb and gutter work along 20th Street from Garfield to Clark and Logan from 19th to 20th. Five supported the proposal, one opposed. Council postponed action to Friday night to consider a resolution of necessity. They also approved a notice for a sanitary sewer project on West Boundary Street with an April 26 hearing at 8 pm. An eight inch sewer would run 1,069 feet from 19th to 22nd Street, with costs assessed by frontage and benefit. A plat and assessment schedule are at the city clerk’s office. The council also approved purchasing a General Electric 12-volt radio for the police cruiser at $424.50.
Absentee ballots for the Clarinda Independent School District bond election must be returned to Secretary Wanda Updike by Saturday night. Ballots may be marked at the courthouse relief office or delivered under notarized procedures. Polls open Monday noon to 7 pm at the courthouse south entrance to decide on a bond not to exceed 265 000 for a combined grade and junior high school building.
