Clarinda’s National Guard unit will be honored at a community recognition dinner at St John’s Lutheran Church at 6 30 pm, arranged by the chamber of commerce. Lt Quentin Annan and his Heavy Mortar Company will attend along with visiting National Guard officers and regular army advisers. The unit earned a superior rating in the Jan 26 federal inspection, prompting a strong turnout for the 8 pm command inspection at Glenn Miller armory. Maj Gen Fred C Tandy and other senior officers from Des Moines are expected, with a large delegation from the 168th Regiment and staff.

Ernest D LeFever 63 farm superintendent at the Clarinda Mental Health Institute died in his apartment in the employes lodge Monday morning. He had led farming operations since August 1 1947. Surviving: wife employed in housekeeping, son Dwayne Glenwood, daughter Mrs Thomas Vandershale Eugene Oregon, sister Esther Le Fever Aurora Nebraska. Funeral at Raynor Glenwood with burial in Glenwood.

Burial of Mrs Harry Lyman in Leon follows Feb death
The death of Mrs Harry Lyman on February 20 is announced. She had lived with her daughter Mrs Catharine Malone in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Burial occurred in Leon, Iowa beside her late husband. The Lymans were longtime Clarinda residents with Mr Lyman's plumbing business on West Lincoln Street.

Harold Davidson Named Officer in Pioneer Lawmakers Group
Harold E Davidson of Clarinda, veteran judge from the 15th district, was named vice-president of the Pioneer Lawmakers association of Iowa during the 33rd biennial session in Des Moines. Frank Shane of Eldon was elected president. Davidson began serving for Page county in the Iowa legislature in 1919. Betty Houk of Clearfield and Larry Hatfield of Bedford won Taylor county spelling championships Saturday. Houk won the oral contest and Hatfield the written, with Beth advancing to the district radio contest.

Plans shown for community building auditorium gymnasium
George W Tewksbury of Mission Kansas presented preliminary plans to the Community Building Corp board Tuesday night for a combined auditorium and gymnasium. The design includes a 50 by 94 foot arena floor, permanent seating for 1 200 on one side, a stage on the other, 680 fold-out bleachers, and a total arena capacity of 1 880. The building houses a kitchen dining for up to 900 in the arena, 319 when the activity room joins the theatre, a club room, and a suite of city offices including mayor and city manager offices and a council chamber that can double as an activity room.

Funeral services planned for former Gravity farmer Lena Yearous
Lena Yearous 54, long time Gravity area farmer, died at the Taylor County home this week. Coroner Dr Earl Stone said death was by hanging from a gate found in a barn at the Bedford county home. She is survived by a son and daughter. Funeral services may be held Saturday, per Walker Funeral Home.

Huge Birthday Cake Marks Centenarian at Mental Health Institute
A 100 year old patient at the Mental Health Institute celebrated a birthday with a party on Tuesday. About sixty fellow elderly patients and ten staff attended. A three by four foot three tier cake baked by the dietician topped with one candle to mark a century. It was the hospital’s first centenarian birthday party, with no known living relatives or visitors besides the chaplain Rev H H Stahnke.
