Escapees From Mental Health Institute Apprehended in Iowa
Two men who fled Clarinda Mental Health Institute on Feb 11 were captured Saturday in southwest Iowa. Edward Beadle, a four time escapee, was halted during a Carson grocery store holdup and is held in Council Bluffs. Charles Von Tersch was arrested near Harlan after stealing a Shelby County pickup. Beadle’s companion remains at large after fleeing with $410. Authorities also recovered the stolen truck abandoned near Glenwood.

Two Shenandoah couples in fatal Missouri crash
Two Shenandoah residents Ralph Ashbaugh and his wife Gladys were killed when their car hit a Buchanan County dump truck turning from Highway 71 near St Joseph. William Brayman and his wife, passengers in the car, were seriously injured and hospitalized. The wreck occurred as road work left two eastbound lanes. witnesses noted the Brayman car traveled over 600 feet and fell 20 feet down an embankment.

Field Fire Threatens Farm Buildings North of Clarinda
A fast moving field fire north of Clarinda Saturday afternoon swept across fields driven by strong winds. Fred Graham Hepburn warned neighbors as flames endangered several farm buildings and prompted rapid action to contain the blaze near Wall Street and Pesyaly Road.

John Gillette 60, a longtime nurse at Clarinda Mental Health Institute, died Monday at Municipal Hospital after 11 days of hospitalization. He would have marked 21 years at the hospital in April. Roy Pratt Home Burned In Night
A large modern farm home in Dallas Township owned by Mr and Mrs Roy Pratt burned to the ground after a lightning strike between 1 and 2 am. Firefighters from Gravity and New Market saved only a few first floor articles, with the barn and garage reportedly saved by rain. The Pratts had lived in the house for several years.

Tractor and semi-trailer damage after highway crash near Braddyville
An estimated 6000 damage occurred to a 1953 International tractor and tandem trailer in a madrugada crash about three miles south of Braddyville at 12:30 am Friday. Driver Lyle Steeve, delivering hogs to the St Joseph livestock exchange, chose to strike a concrete abutment to avoid an oncoming car, escaping with minor injuries including a sprained wrist. the rig sustained total loss, rear wheels torn off.
