Owners of 1143.71 acres seek to join Drainage District No 9 on the Nodaway River south of Clarinda. They will appeal the Feb 9 board ruling overruling objections to annexation, hearing set for April 18 at the courthouse. Bids for river channel improvements totaling 57580.38 will be opened March 17 at 2 PM. The appeal will not halt the construction proceedings, per appellants’ attorney.

Family homeless after Shambaugh house burned
The Richard Carroll house burned Sunday morning, leaving the Donald Ring family and Carroll family completely homeless. Only a few furniture pieces survived. the Rings had moved in three weeks prior. Fire crews from Shambaugh and volunteers from Braddyville and nearby towns aided in fighting the blaze. The Rings and baby were home. Carrolls were downtown. Insurance covered the house but not furniture. the property was being sold, with transfer papers planned for Monday.

Purloined hub caps land fines for three teens
Three teenagers were fined 25 dollars each and costs by Justice R J Mc Curdy for stealing hub caps from two cars on January 10. Deputy Sheriff Tom Cummine charged Ed Larson Wayne Fishel and Harry Brown with tampering with a motor vehicle. The hub caps were taken near the Standard service station and elsewhere in Shenandoah and Red Oak. Court appearance was delayed by illness and bad weather.

Funeral services for Daisy Walker Schurr 57 were held in Bedford with burial in Clarinda Cemetery. She died Thursday at 8:45 pm at the Municipal Hospital after four weeks of illness. Born March 11 1902 near College Springs she lived in Taylor and Page counties, taught rural schools, worked at several firms, and in 1947 started Daisy's Style Shop in Bedford. She is survived by her husband George and siblings Jess Walker Harry Walker Maisy Crain and Amy Shum.
