City Council Hears Hospital Survey Plan and Legal Opinion

March meeting notes the Planning and Zoning Commission recommending a hospital survey and possible south end addition to the third floor. A legal opinion says the council holds responsibility for hospital construction, while funds and remodeling oversight rest with the council. The city manager was assigned to find a consultant with input from Burns and McDonnell and the American Hospital Association.

Clarinda Firm Wins Four Bridge Contracts in Iowa

The Cla rinda Coal and Concrete Co won four replacement bridges on the Page County Farm-to-Market road system from the Iowa Highway Commission at Ames. The bid total is 104 638 dollars for four bridges with two 128 foot steel I beam bridges. Two 92 foot precast concrete slab bridges cost 45 308 dollars. Locations include near College Springs Norwich and Clarinda area with completion set for August for precast and November 30 for steel bridges.

Public Affairs Meeting Tuesday at Shenandoah Country Club

The Page and Fremont County Extension Services sponsor a public affairs dinner meeting Tuesday at 6 30 pm at Shenandoah Country Club. City Council approves sick leave policy for ill or injured workers

The council adopted a policy giving city employees full pay for 30 to 60 days of illness and 120 days for injury with proof of Workmen's Compensation settlements. The measure, proposed by City Manager RH van Deusen, set no ongoing cut off and seeks no abuse of the current system. The group also raised the Sinclair Oil property offer to $5,000 and ordered a survey of county seat restroom facilities.

Two Clarinda Officers Resign From Police Force

Chief Reynolds reports two Clarinda police officers have resigned within a week. Curtis Landis resigned February 26 to accept full time work with Green Bay Lumber Co. Landis moved to Clarinda from Diagonal to join the force. Martin Walter resigned Sunday after five years on the force and former implement dealer here. His future plans were not announced.

School Carnival Opens With Side Shows At High School

Two side shows will entertain carnival attendees. The Old Time Melodrama directed by Fred Rhoads plays three times and Tops in Pops directed by Nelson Crow performs twice. Cast includes Snodderly Pruitt Williams Hatfield Pfander Isaacson. Bud Dillon hosts with Dan Evans as MC and Mary Jane Clinton as accompanist.

Clarinda Chamber plans parade and queen contest events

The Retail Committee of the Clarinda Chamber of Commerce led by Merv Martin organizes vote certificates for purchases from Friday to Saturday March 23. A parade in the Clarinda business district on March 16 at 2 pm introduces seven Queen of the Spring candidates. An auditorium show March 28 at 8 pm features about 200 Clarinda high school students. College Choir Sings Second Annual Spring Concert

The Clarinda College Choir presents its home concert Friday March 15 at 8 pm in the school auditorium. A 37 member group features soloists and small ensembles interspersed with contemporary numbers. The choir recently sang before the Iowa Legislature and hopes for TV exposure and another spring tour.

Gray Ladies aid at Clarinda Mental Health Institute

Three local Gray Ladies volunteers logged 2397 hours aiding rehabilitation at the Clarinda Mental Health Institute. They visit wards, assist occupational therapy, run musical programs, entertain patients, and help at dances and parties, saving taxpayer funds by speeding patient return to useful life.

Committees Form for Easter Rites Outline in Southwest Iowa

The Southwest Iowa Easter Sunrise Service organizers name 25 members under W C Hemphill who leads the effort. A 5 30 start on April 21 is set with broadcast approval, school band and college chorus arrangements, and a brief sermon by the Ministerial Alliance. Jim Tisdale, D L Roberts, and George Hall head committees for Program, Properties, and Finance. Churches will supply members for three groups. A Drive-In Theatre site and a permanent outdoor stage will serve the event and future community uses.
