Clarinda FFA boys to tour East on annual trip
Clarinda FFA members eight two dozen students will travel by 25 passenger bus starting June 4 for a three week journey to the Eastern Seaboard. Seniors and juniors will visit Caterpillar Peoria International Truck Fort Wayne Bromsfield Farm Washington DC sights and landmarks including the Smithsonian and Capitol. The trip blends project work with fund raising, with photos of the Parent-Son Banquet to run in Thursday's Herald Journal.

Father of College Student Hurt in Cave-in at Ditch
Irvin Foster a 47 year old Sidney resident and father of Clarinda Junior College student Mary Foster was seriously injured Friday when a cave in occurred at a 13 foot lake creek diversion ditch near Council Bluffs. He was pinned against a concrete conduit under dirt to his chest and freed after five minutes. Foster remained in critical condition with multiple rib fractures and could not speak. Mary Foster was alerted and traveled to Council Bluffs to be with her father. He was assisting Larsen Brothers Construction on a 48 inch conduit installation.

Coin Man Fined Fifty Dollars In Court Here Friday
Leo D Doyle of Coin was fined 50 dollars and costs in District Court here Friday after pleading guilty to permitting another person to drive his car while its license was suspended. Doyle faced an information dated December 19 and filed in District Court late in January by the State Highway Patrol. he was free pending trial on a 1,000 dollar bail bond.

Essex Woman Anna Maria Pearson Funeral Tuesday
Funeral services are set for Tuesday for Anna Maria Pearson 78 of Essex who died Saturday evening at Hand Hospital Shenandoah. She came to the United States from Sweden at 24 and lived in Page County for 47 years. Surviving are her husband Charles ten children and several relatives. Services by Rev Paul Hedberg at Walker Funeral Home at 2 pm with interment in Essex cemetery.

Shenandoah High School sent top ratings as 10 schools competed in the Pre District Speech Contest in Clarinda. Shenandoah earned nine I ratings and four II's, Clarinda followed with seven I's and two II's, Stanton trailed with five I's and three II's, and other schools included Malvern Sidney Silver City Essex Red Oak Tabor City Parragut and Stanton. Notable double winners were Susan Christner and Donna McNeilly of Shenandoah, with Patsy Gearheart of Malvern and Delores McMahan of Silver City also scoring top I's. The Clarinda cast for the one act "Which Is the Way to Itow?" included Kelley Hill Richardson Mascher, and the runners-up included Annette Voth and Mary Jane Clinton in original oratory.

Mrs Harry Salomon of Clarinda was named 1956 fund raising chairman for East Page County Cancer Control, announced by Mrs Alfred Sump. Last year the county surpassed its goal by raising 2001.
