The American Red Cross calls for a nationwide fund drive to support blood services disaster relief and health programs. The 75th anniversary year is highlighted as a moment to boost memberships and funds for servicemen veterans and communities.
Leap day births and celebrations marked February 29 in Clarinda and surrounding areas. Judith Ann Huddle received a four candle cake at Clarinda High School from home economics girls and Miss Josephine Sherman. Other leap year birthdays include Robert Allen Burks in Clarinda and a new arrival Rhonda Lee Watkins born at Clarinda Municipal Hospital.
Warren Gaer, Drake University football coach, will be the principal speaker at the Page County Teachers dinner in Essex High School gym March 7 at 6 30 pm. A smorgasbord will be served by the Essex High School Band Mothers. All county teachers are invited.
The Page County Democratic Central Committee calls a Yorktown Town Hall meeting this Thursday at 8 pm to elect precinct committeemen and women and delegates for the county convention to be held April 6. All interested voters are invited to attend.
Donald J Jordan, field representative of the Omaha SSA office, will be in Clarinda at the Courthouse on Tuesdays March 6 and March 20 from 1 pm to 2 30 pm. He will assist retired individuals filing old age insurance claims and survivors benefits claims.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon for Harry S Johnson 78 who died at the Clarinda Rest Home. A lifelong resident and longtime blacksmith he is survived by wife Martha and six children Lily Lucille Clarence LaVon Orvie and Klad. Services at Walker Funeral Home at 2 pm with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery.
About 200 volunteers opened the March drive for a $7,161 goal for the East Page County American Red Cross. Coffee meetings at Linderman Hotel, chaired by Hunt and Gregory, drew more than 100 drive leaders and solicitors. Local and rural chairmen outlined home services and campaign literature was distributed.
Isadora May Lindsey 88 died at her son Forests home in Greeley Colorado on Wednesday. The body goes to Walker Funeral Home for services at New Market Church of Christ Monday at 10 am. She had lived in New Market most of her life and is survived by son Forest Lindsey and daughter Fern Ray of Clarinda. Burial will be in Old Memory Cemetery.
Jean M Gray of Clarinda files in district court for separate maintenance and temporary custody of four minor children against John C Gray. The couple wed in Nodaway County Missouri on January 5 1942.
Clarinda College Choir directed by Nelson Crow announces a home concert at 7 30 pm in the school auditorium on Tuesday with three performance groups and solo numbers plus free shows at Bedford Mount Ayr Macksburg Greenfield St Charles Prairie City and Ferguson. The tour ends with a performance at the Junior College Music Festival in Marshalltown on Tuesday March 20 and returns to Clarinda March 21.
Five Clarinda Junior College students escaped serious harm when their Nash sedan overturned on Highway 90 near Booneville after a car ahead braked suddenly. Driver Jay Dee Fuerst and four others from Webster City and Ames were treated for minor injuries, with Fastenau the only one kept for observation before release.
John Schultz, school district reorganization consultant, will address the Clarinda Chamber of Commerce dinner at St John’s Lutheran Church Monday at 6 30 pm and later speak at 8 pm in the high school auditorium at a PTA sponsored open meeting. Pagemere Angus Farms of Clarinda will hold its sixth annual Aberdeen Angus Bull Sale at North Platte Nebraska on Tuesday. The sale starts at 1 pm in the Pure bred Livestock Pavilion on the Lincoln County Fairgrounds. Twenty seven bulls, all descendants of Marycrest Eileenmere 3d and Pageileenmere 16th, will be offered with auctioneer Charlie Corkle and fieldman Arden Aegerter. Buyers include Jake Stimson Ed Falk and son Lyle Myron Johnston among others from Pagemere Farms. Ben Goecker is not offering stock.
Ivan Pete Johnson began work Monday as an employee of the Peter man Tractor Co, marking a new staffing move in Clarinda business circles.
Amity Township will hold its Republican caucus Friday March 2 at 8 pm in the High School College Springs. The caucus will select six delegates to the Page County Republican presidential convention to be held at the Courthouse on March 16 at 10 am.
Clarinda hosts a Shamrock Days queen contest led by Yvonne Johnson among 11 candidates with prizes around 500 dollars. Votes cost about one cent each based on merchandise purchases through March 10. Proceeds from a April 26 27 Cardinal Canteen talent show at the high school auditorium will enlarge the canteen and add recreation equipment, cosponsored by Kiwanis Lions and Rotary clubs.
The Clarinda Ground Observer Corps will reorganize at 7 30 pm in the Administration Building at Municipal Airport on Wednesday March 7. The meeting invites all former members and interested locals to reactivate the post and participate in Operation Skywatch through the Omaha Filter Center.

Funeral services were held in Bedford for Martin H Borrusch 83 who died Friday at Young Rest Home Clarinda He was born September 29 1872 in Mendota Illinois and grew up in Iowa He was a carpenter and contractor who helped build notable Nodaway County structures He married Addie M Coleman February 29 1900 Survivors include son Paul Bedford two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews Preceded in death by wife and a son Virgil
The Clarinda Kiwanis club gathered Tuesday at the Cardinal Canteen for dinner served by Mrs Merle Stevens and staff. Merle Stevens chaired the program as Glenn Hipsley outlined canteen affairs and praised its success. The group noted plans to expand facilities with a talent show on April 26 27 to fund a new room and pool table.
