The County Board of Supervisors approved a proposed 1958 budget totaling 1 325 300 with a tax ask of 819 500 an 18 percent rise from 1957. Public hearing is set for August 13 at 10 30 am in the courthouse meeting room.
Ruth Landers Caprio, youngest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs George W Landers, died suddenly July 22 in Boston where she had lived for twenty years. A Clarinda alumna of 1921 and a noted musician, she studied organ in Paris under Louis Vierne. Her husband Anthony Caprio resides in Boston, with sisters Mrs Henri Blanch of Cambridge and Mrs Louis I Perry of Los Angeles.
A large crowd gathered for Clarinda’s paving opening and festival featuring free watermelons, a 30 minute band concert directed by Richard Mowery, and the final jackpot drawing for a 1957 Chevrolet. Leonard Wagoner won after 28 draws with Linda Goecker drawing the first coupon.
Fourteen horses and riders from New Market earned the overall trophy at the fourth annual Saddle Club Roundup in Ak Sar Ben Omaha. Midwestern clubs entered 500 to 600 horses and riders, with an audience of about 5 000. The Harlan Iowa club won the grand entry award while New Market claimed three team trophies the relay race the family pickup race and the obstacle course.
Richard Huff vocal and instrumental music director at Anita agrees to perform with the Clarin da Municipal Band in their last pop concert of the season Thursday at pm. He studied with Nelson Crow and has sung professionally for the U S Army radio clubs and churches. Huff will sing Serenade from The Student Prince by Sigmund Romberg. A trumpet trio featuring Duane Johnson Marvin Negley and Dennis Holbrook will perform Leroy Andersons Buglers Holiday.
Mr Johnson resigns from Clarinda faculty to finish work toward a bachelor’s degree at the University of Nebraska and plans to move to Lincoln with his wife. He taught social science and served as assistant athletics coach at the Junior High School, and is a Clarinda High School and Clarinda Junior College alumnus.
Library notes highlight four titles from well known authors. Vardis Fisher's Pemmican delves into Hudson Bay Company era Canada with adventure and conquest themes. Iola Fuller’s The Gilded Torch centers on New France life around the Great Lakes and Mississippi Valley in 1650 to 1700. John Masters presents Bhowani Junction era India through Peter Savage’s ambitious arc. Robert Muir’s Sprig of Hemlock recounts Shay's Rebellion of 1786 with a focus on justice and revolt.
The annual election for the County ASC Committee at the Clarinda Production Credit Association office chose Harrel Falk of Clarinda as chairman succeeding Oscar Engstrom of Essex. Engstrom named vice-chairman with Harold Otte as regular member. New alternates are Ross Calhoon of Shambaugh and Carl Van Fosson of Braddyville. The officers assume duties Thursday. Thayer Anderson of Shenandoah was previous vice-chairman. Fourteen townships represented. Washington and Nebraska Townships lacked representation.
Clarinda High School faculty member Russell R Price completed a six weeks summer course in science and mathematics at Iowa State College Ames. Fifty seven teachers from Iowa and eleven other states attended to broaden knowledge and enliven science study. Morning sessions covered chemistry mathematics and biology with ISC faculty. Afternoons included conferences discussions lab projects and field trips.
Commanding officer Ronald Schenck of the Clarinda Heavy Mortar Company inspects a caravan of vehicles before an 8 30 a m departure delayed by regimental order. The two companies unite as one unit for Camp Ripley Minn two week session of the 34th Infantry Division. Young guardsmen look forward to the trip despite rugged training ahead.
Kenneth H Williams 24 and Violet B Friend 21 both of Clarinda. Lewis L Gabriel 33 of Albany and Shirley G Richardson 26 of St Joseph Missouri.
Carol Lynn Fleck of Oskaloosa won Miss Iowa 1958 at Clear Lake. She will represent Iowa in the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City. First runner up was Judy Rickard, Miss Story County, a Chicago student at Iowa State College. Kathleen Ann Lannon, Miss Mason City, was second runner up. Finalists included Sally Kay Black and Sharon Smith.
No bids were received for the service station building and contents on the city lot at 16th and Stuart Street. City Manager R H van Deusen said bids were to be opened at City Hall Thursday afternoon, and the city will dispose of the building another way. The lot will be used for public parking.
The Shenandoah office of the Iowa Employment Service reports exceptionally high demand for seasonal agricultural labor last week as detasseling of hybrid seed corn hay cutting weeding soybeans and oat harvest ran at peak activity with rogueing of hybrid sorghum starting.
Seventeen Page County girls compete in the Queen of the Furrow Contest at Bradley's Hotel Essex for a chance to represent the county at the Cass County Fair and advance toward the Ames finals. Winners receive a 17 jewel wrist watch and a chance to be hostess for the Field Day and Plowing Matches near Hampton.

Mrs Albert Rope of Clarinda and Mrs Sieg Schroeder of Yorktown travel to Minneapolis for the seventh biennial International Lutheran Women’s Missionary League convention. Schroeder presides over the Council Bluffs Zone, Rope heads the Iowa District West League. About 300 delegates and up to 1500 guests are anticipated. Rev James Mayer will speak.
Lee Weir of Bedford will represent Taylor County 4-H at the ninth annual State Leadership Training Conference for Young People at the State 4-H Camp near Madrid August 5 through 10. Selection is based on demonstrated leadership in club and community work and the camp is cosponsored by the Roebuck Foundation.
