City proposes 1958 tax asking of 140 297 dollars up 2 729 from 1957 while mill rate drops to 25 95 due to annexation growth. Public hearing set for August 7 at City Hall. Expenditures exceed one million dollars for the first time driven by a waterworks project funded mainly by bonds and state aid.
Page County Engineer L. Hoppock notes summer flash floods with 3 to 4 inches of rain in half an hour damaged crossroad culvert pipes and road grades. Obstructions like woven wire near pipe ends trap debris, reducing flow and causing road closures. He advises fencing panels around upper pipe ends to allow unobstructed runoff and prevent costly damage.
Nearly 300 patients and staff at Clarinda State Mental Health Institute are immunized against diphtheria after a death from the disease. Dr Karl Catlin reports no new cases and skin tests show about half the population susceptible. throat cultures among 97 tested are negative per Dr I H Borts. Meanwhile letters from a church work camp in Reykjavik describe travel, injuries, and observations of Icelandic life as part of ecumenical outreach, including rock excavation near a foundation and travel details.
Readied demonstrations cover Page County Agricultural Fair Aug 14 17 with 4 H clubs. Extension trainee Ronald L Rubin notes two age groups senior over 14 and junior 10 to 14 compete in two classes. Two senior teams will advance to the State Fair.
The newly repaved Clarinda business district will host a 2 pm melon feed on 15th Street with free watermelons from Texas. Barricades come down Friday morning as the State Highway Commission, city crews, and local groups complete sidewalk work and lighting. A 4 pm 1957 Chevrolet drawing caps the event with 25 names added to the jackpot and winners required to be present to claim the car.
Funeral service held for John B Burright of Rock Rapids Iowa who died Saturday after a long illness Burial and services occurred in Rock Rapids He is survived by four sisters Adie Ida Blanche and Mrs Nettie Kinney of Clarinda and seven children including Kenneth of Bedford A sister in law Mrs Mary Boub of Montana attended The local sisters could not attend due to illness in the home John Burright preceded him in death about ten years ago
Page County is among 49 Iowa counties that have obligated more farm to market road funds than the balance on hand June 30 1957. The State Highway Commission reports Page County over-obligated 100 456 59 dollars. County Engineer L N Hoppock says this is normal and funds expected from the state after July 1 should cover the over obligation.
N Bernard Gussett of Iowa Power and Light spoke to the Clarinda Kiwanis Club on nuclear power. He warned it may be years off despite the developing science and discussed global concerns over atomic energy and historical leaders.
Mrs Max Miller of Braddyville was selected as school hot lunch manager by the Clarinda Board of Education at a Monday night meeting. Assistants named were Mrs Elmer Kent Mrs Kennard Maier and Miss Florence Wagoner. The team will work 7 a.m. to 2 30 p.m. five days weekly and remodeling to create a hot lunch center is underway. Paper plates and aluminum trays will be used and a workshop may be attended in Red Oak.
Clarinda Lions and families plan the annual summer picnic at Fair Grounds Park shelterhouse Monday at 6 30 pm. President Paul Mc Clelland notes a ham baked beans potato chips plus pop and ice cream menu with all food and drink supplied while each family brings its own table service.
Red Oak proposes a 1958 city budget boosting the tax levy by 41 100 bringing the total amount to be raised by taxation to 195 600. The rise finances a new sewage disposal fund and higher general operating costs per City Clerk Rita Walters.
Three Clarinda girls from Clarinda Junior College Girls Trio have been selected to represent Iowa at the International Walther League Convention in Stillwater Oklahoma August 11 to 15. NRirdice Clark Marianne Buch and Mildred Gust began singing together after winning a Walther League talent quest in Jefferson last spring. They have performed widely in Iowa and appeared on KFEQ-TV, Sto Joseph, Missouri, and the State Legislature. They will sing a religious number at a vesper service and local church groups are funding their trip, which they will undertake by car.
By June Page County investors bought United States savings bonds totaling 134 574 dollars boosting six month sales to 981 248 dollars. Iowa June sales rose to 10 812 187 dollars with a six month total of 74 465 084 dollars. County and nearby totals include Taylor 67 percent Adams 70 percent Montgomery 69 percent Mills 45 percent Fremont 11 percent.
Pagemere Angus Farms at Clarinda sold one purebred Aberdeen Angus bull and two registered Angus cows to Estes J Hardee of Shambaugh. The sale highlights a small consignor selling high quality cattle to a regional buyer.
CB&Q Railroad officials met with Clarinda residents at City Hall to announce a petition to the Interstate Commerce Commission to abandon the Clarinda to Northboro line. They reported plans for a daily main-line run from Pacific Junction to Creston via Willisea and Clarinda, with continued service on the southbound route and no expected freight-rate increases. A deficit of 66,612 dollars for the 45.83 miles between Clarinda and Northboro was cited.
Martha Winter, Hepburn, and Donnett Morrow, Blanchard, will represent Page County 4 H clubs at the ninth annual State Leadership Training Conference for Young People at the State 4 H Camp near Madrid. The Aug 5 10 camp, led by Iowa State College extension staff, teaches group life techniques and leadership skills with a youth council directing daily programs.
Families of National Guard units from southwest Town will stay connected to Camp Ripley this summer via radio station KMA Shenandoah. Tom Burns a KMA DJ and seventh summer encampment attendee will present updates on the training and Guardsmen activities during the next two weeks.
